She’s a freaking socialite, isn’t she? She’s selfish to her core. I don’t think she ever wanted to be married to anyone. It would mean the focus wasn’t on her for half a second, and that would just be too long for her to endure.

That's an important omission.

Hypergamy at work. She came from a toff family with an upper-class outlook, so added to her aggressive feminism, was the need to find a partner of equal or higher class and intellectual status - and the pool of available partners was always extremely small.
