I'm single, childless and alone. Feminism has failed me and my generation, writes PETRONELLA WYATT

Every Monday I meet with a group of female friends in a London restaurant. We sit at a table near the window and discuss our lives.

We have many things in common. We are all in our mid-50s and highly educated career women. But there is a vacuum in our lives. We are all single and childless.

I increasingly feel, as do many of my intimates, that feminism has failed our generation. I grew up with its beliefs. No, strike that. I was force-fed them.

By the age of 13, Christmas presents from my Women's Lib aunt were books by Gloria Steinem and Simone de Beauvoir, considered the mother of modern feminism. (My aunt was one of those militants who had famously disrupted the 1970 Miss World contest).

My peers and I watched Mary Poppins, idolising the determinedly single nanny (never noticing the occasional sadness behind her eyes), and sympathising with suffragette Mrs Banks, while wondering why she didn't leave her dullard of a husband.

When told they were missing out on the joys of children and in addition the AWFULs (Affluent White Female Urban Liberals) would have no one to care for them when they were old, I’ve seen responses such as “I’ve saved money by not having children so will be able to hire the best health caregiver”.

Have they heard of the quality of nursing assistants and home health care nurses we currently have in the U.S.? And the shortage of even those in the field? I know there are some that are excellent care givers but those are few and far between and are not near enough in numbers to provide services for that that need the care.

Exactly. All she needs is some box chardonnay and a cat.

One of my aunts never had children, a long stable marriage to one man until he died.

They raised horses and had some cats and a dog around from time to time.

I’ve never heard her express any regret about no children.

She keeps an immaculate home, barn and a few acres of land.

Box wine, bon-bons & kitties galore

My wife has her husband, three children, chocolate I gift her (she takes hers with Stevia), and we have two great kitties . . . and a small dog. A woman can have it all!

I assume you’re young.

I’m 79. We NEEDED women’s lib at that time.

I checked out on the Zeiss Planetarium at the Adler Planetarium. I was a physics major at U of Chicago. I was told that I couldn’t do Zeiss lectures because I was a woman and women’s voices weren’t authoritative in the dark. One dream gone.

I wrote movie scripts for computer topics. I was told that the narrator HAD to be a man because women’s voices weren’t acceptable as authoritative. And the keypunch operator we showed HAD to be a woman.

Women’s lib came about because society put down women and didn’t give them equal opportunities. Then, women’s lib was a good solution. But once it started putting down men, it became clear that simple equality wasn’t the goal. That ruined it for me but at least women finally had access to opportunities. If the opportunities were blown, so be it. But when ability matched with opportunity, then we were free to go for whatever goal we had.

I have a wife, three children, a decent job, two great kitties.

My wife is attentive, supportive and faithful. She makes burgers for me. The children are works in progress, we’ll see.

I don’t have kids and have no problem with that. I dreamed big of what I could accomplish. Not my children. Me. Men had no problem dreaming, but women were supposed to not exist except as pathways for a new generation of girls to be childrearers and boys to be the ones who accomplished.

Garbage. That attitude is why Women’s Lib was necessary. Thank goodness society has moved past those attitudes and roles are now chosen rather than forced.

I did what I wanted to do and accomplished much of what I dreamed of doing. I’ll pass the torch to another generation that will not be of my genes but of my dreams.

I have friends who were so against children that they were sterilized. That was their choice. I respect it. I have friends who popped out kids like puppies. Some came out well. Some came out poorly. I respect those choices as well.

Yes, society absolutely needs reproducers. And those who do so should be respected. But not everyone needs to be a baby factory. And their choice deserves equal respect.

These women are my generation. I watched it happen. They were force-fed “f**k around” and get a career - THAT is what a modern woman should be. Don’t rely on a man.

Now they have nothing and will grow old....with nothing.

While this message is still pervasive, younger women seem to be starting to question it. They f**k and have sh*tty relationships that go nowhere (mainly due to them all f**king the same top 5% of dudes). Then their ‘career’ is turning out to be more competitive than they realized and they can’t make ends meet. Plus, all it includes is WORK WORK WORK.

So they’re single and broke. Now they look at decades prior and realize those women had a man (e.g. lover, provider, and protector), a house, and kids - a real life. Now it doesn’t look so bad....but they’ve trashed men so much men aren’t interested.

What a mess.

My wife’s stepmother is in her mid-60’s and is a gorgeous and sweet woman who never had biological children, she couldn’t physically. But she accepted her step children as her own and they her.

She is highly successful having worked 30 yrs as a college instructor and president and now is retired and operates a funeral home and dentist office that are making money and successful. Still with all this going on she makes time for her children and especially her grandchildren. She treats me like a king and treated her late husband the same way.

You can have the career and still be happy, but you have to set your priorities, hers are God, family, then career.
