The whole area was weakened by 400 years of warfare with the Romans and the Plague of Justinian (roughly 100 years earlier!). When Islam came out of the desert it punched an almost empty bag.

IIRC The Persians and the Greeks were weakened by 1500 years of fighting each other and both fell victim to the Islamic armies from Arabia.
