A proposed Senate bill would prohibit self-checkout lanes for customers at all California grocery and retail drug stores unless certain conditions are met. It’s all in an effort to combat theft.
“I think self-checkouts are pretty good in terms of efficiency," said David Kisieu, Cal Poly student. "If I don’t have a lot of stuff, I don’t really want to wait and deal with a lot of people. I just scan something really quickly and leave."
Senate Bill 1446, proposed by state Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas of Los Angeles, stores would be able to offer self-checkout lanes if the checkouts are limited to 10 items or less and at least one manual checkout lane is staffed by an employee.
“If I’m going to use self-checkout, I’m going to use 10 items or fewer anyways, so if it’s a way to deter theft, sure,” Kisieu said.
“It kind of keeps it fair for people because if you’re going to have more than 10 items it’s going to take you a minute," said Brendan Smith, Cal Poly student. "It defeats the whole purpose of helping mitigate the lines because then there’s just going to be another big line over there."

Those conveyor belts are so germy I prefer self checkout and bagging my groceries the way I want them
As do I. It's faster, helps keep prices low, and there are always open lanes.
It also helps with my blood pressure when some woman stands there as the entire huge cart of groceries is scanned and is caught off guard and totally surprised when it's empty that she needs some method of payment. Then and only then does she go digging in a bottomless pit of a handbag.
I get mad even thinking of the times I spent an eternity in line to have some receipt checker start quibbling over ten cents. I've offered as much as $5 if they will just go on but they never take it. They just look at me like I,m speaking Swahili with a Martian accent and go back to delaying all in line.

No need to traipse all the way to one of them city stores when you can have the convenience of fine merchandise brought by truck to your front yard.

That growling sound you hear in the distance is from our two vicious guard dogs on the way. They like tasty snacks like complaining shoppers. Especially when it’s lunch time like now.
wtf business is it of the facsist State of California?
they should be shot before they do it to us
This could be more about preventing business from automating in order to save $20 an hour jobs. As noted, five-finger shoppers do not care about checkout lines.
Why did we get tem anyway? Seems like what demos try, and it all goes downhill, but somone always gets rich or richer.\
Anyone need a bankruptcy about now?
I'd bet that for every person who walks out of a grocery store with a full shopping cart full of stolen food, there's countless people who are intentionally not scanning items in their cart. Those t-bone steaks? We'll just pretend to scan those and play stupid if we get caught. "I thought I scanned that!" And they probably get away with it more times than they don't.
And in today's Bideneconomy, it's becoming more frequent as people grow desperate.
It is not about the shoplifting or security. It is about increasing hiring if union store clerks. Follow the $$$$$.
People are stealing like crazy from self-checkouts
They work, for the honest portion of the population
Dimocrats want to claim they are for the little guy, and they think asking them to scan their own groceries is forced labor.
Exactly
It’s under the banner of states rights. If California thinks this will help, that’s on them.
“They work, for the honest portion of the population.”
The issue does not require legislation. There are private business operation changes that can deal with the situation.
At one CVS store I know of in Manhattan, NYC, they have an employee at the self-checkout station area watching what goes on.
Yeah that works.
If you have ONE machine.
Trust me, I know this all too well.
“I like self checkouts,”
.
I don’t like being yelled at, even by a machine.
The usual suspects shoplift stores into bankruptcy, then the gov’t makes them pay the extra cashiers $20/hr.
Are these turds compelled to legislate on everything?
Another fuster-cluck. This should be left up to the retail store to decide… not the F-ing government. The government will not even arrest and jail criminals!
