At Shabbat dinner outside of Tel Aviv on Friday night, my very politically liberal Israeli hosts expressed the opinion that Netanyahu was purposefully delaying the end of the war, because his governance will end when the war ends. Therefore, they believe the war will go on as long as possible so the Right can continue to control as much of the government as possible. They are confident the Left will win the next election.
I kept my mouth shut on this subject, as I am relatively ignorant, shouldn’t involve myself in local politics, and oughtn’t annoy my hosts by being disagreeable.
But the Left / Right fracture in Israel seems stronger than in the U.S.
I can see that happening.
Netanyahu is a political beast who has always placed his personal interests first.
The Left in Israel is dying. Dati Leumi and hareidim reproduce in abundance, and tens of thousands make aliyah every year. Not many of them vote Leftist.
The death grip WASPs (White Askenaz Socialist Post-military) have on media, law, and bureaucracy in Israel is slipping away. Let them emigrate to America.
