Stop signs replace some Oakland traffic lights to deter copper theft
CBS ^ | 05 18 2024 | Da Lin

Oakland has removed the traffic lights from one intersection and replaced them with 4-way stop signs due to people stealing copper and then tampering with an electrical box.

It's a sight that has made drivers do a double take: a stop sign hanging overhead where a traffic light would normally be, located above the intersection of E. 12th Street and 16th Avenue in Oakland.

Neighbors said city workers removed the all the traffic lights in the last week and replaced them with four-way stop signs. The installation came after months of people stealing copper wires and tampering with the city electrical boxes that supply power to the traffic lights.

"It's just telling us that the city is giving up on us," said Tam Le, owner of Le's Auto Body & Engine Repair, located at the corner of the intersection.

Neighbors said the lights that were there before hadn't worked in months, either blinking red or being completely out.

About 15 years ago someone stole the Sakagawea sculpture from a beach lookout on the Oregon coast. They drove it out of town and attempted to sell it for scrap. They were all arrested. How does someone explain why they have a chopped up well know bronze Sakagawea sculpture?

In Oakland does anyone stop at stop signs?

Years ago I was transferred to SF. MY workmate was driving late evening as we were doing interviews. He was zipping down a thoroughfare when I said hey slow down at intersections. Next intersection he slowed to a crawl when a box truck driven by a local denizen blew right past a stop sign crossing to our front. He gasped how did you know? I said culture awareness.

We should give this a catchy name like “downteching” and see if we can get it to trend into more and more areas of life.

Several years back I was driving through Fort Myers and I noticed that I was behind a pickup truck advertising AC condenser cage installation. Several blocks later I realized I had entered into his prime sales territory. Everyone of the small houses we passed had a steel enclosure around the AC condenser to prevent theft.

In the 1990s, I was spending time in Mexico and Central America. With fluent Spanish, I was able to learn more about every day life. One day in Mexico City, two cars collided at a four way intersection. My local friends described how such accidents were ‘settled.’ Of the two drivers, whoever’s family showed up first, then the other driver was at fault. Strength in numbers.

I no longer travel in Mexico, or Oakland.

Soon the entire state will be covered in traffic circles and turn lanes

California has been highly successful in getting homeowner’s insurance carriers to leave the state. I guess they want to replicate their success with auto insurers.

Peasants murdering peasants is of little concern to The Crown.

Police departments weren't really common until the 19th century. Until then, individuals, or volunteer posses or militias, hunted down miscreants and often exacted street justice without involving the sheriff.

Isn’t that awful? Did they get the statue back to the park?

If the rotten leftist bastards aren’t tearing down our history and culture, the druggies are selling statues and plaques for scrap metal.

About a month ago, I took a six-day tour down the coast from Ilwaco, WA to the SF Bay Area. I spent some time at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria and visited many lighthouses on the Oregon coast, but didn’t get a chance to stop at Clasp or the many Lewis & Clark historic points. Maybe next trip!

I’ve gotta wonder if criminals were arrested held and put to hard labor while waiting trial and after conviction if it would effect crime rates.

In Texas they are getting rid of lights and stop signs by putting in round-abouts.

We are seeing lots of that in Idaho, too. I think they work very well.

Current copper is $96. It got as high as $269.

I was $62 before the above started.

Used copper prices can’t be that good, so something else is going on. Drug prices went up?

I suspect that contractors who previously bid on the traffic signal maintenance decided not to bid on the current contract as it’s too dangerous and these bankrupt Democrat cities are trying to lowball them on the pricing anyway.

Politicians are importing crime as fast as they can. Why would anyone think they’ll fix the problem?

It's more than what it seems. If swiping copper wiring from live elec boxes makes the news, think of what other things these creeps are doing, and also what they might be capable of.

And, how far from Oakland are they willing to travel to commit crimes? (There are some very exclusive places in the East Bay hills.)

A few decades ago, I had a satellite office in Oakland. I never felt safe, and that was then. I avoid the area completely now, and I avoid the entire state as much as possible.

They pay for aluminum on the spot. For copper you have to wait a week to get your money. In both cases, they take your fingerprint, your picture, and a picture of your vehicle and license plate and driver’s license.
