A New York county executive plans to "deputize" legal gun owners to help law enforcement officers during emergencies, but the move is facing pushback from critics who say it will lead to acts of vigilantism.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said the deputies must be over 21 years old, be U.S. citizens and Nassau County residents, undergo a full background check, take a drug test and have a valid firearm license. They would be paid $150 a day for their service, according to the plan.
"They will have to be trained on the law and use of force," Blakeman, a Republican elected to the county's top post in 2021, told CBS News New York on Sunday. "And if I were to use them, it wouldn't be for normal police functions. It would be for protecting infrastructure like hospitals, power plants, mosques and synagogues, and things of that nature so that we could free up our police officers to do other work."
Over 100 people submitted applications for the openings after Blakeman and Nassau County Sheriff Anthony LaRocco posted an advertisement on the county’s website in March seeking candidates for "Provisional Emergency Special Deputy Sheriffs."

That is EXACTLY an argument used by leftists against constitutionally correct bearing of arms policies. I even hear it in Sarah Brady's voice ...
Oh, aren’t you just so clever? I mean really, is that the best you have? Sophomoric wannabe comedian.
Oh, I understand that. But Speaking for myself, I don’t have the training or skill to make a split second decision on whether or not to shoot, and I am a pretty good shot with handguns and rifles. That takes training and some experience. I don’t give a damn what the libs think about anything.
Sheriff’s Auxiliaries are not really that controversial unless someone is looking to misrepresent them. That said, I’m not sure how secure I’d feel that the current New York state legal system has my back...
No way. If you read my other comments, I said I consider myself to be “trigger happy” and would probably shoot first and ask questions later. Simply because I don’t have the amount of training necessary to make split second decisions necessary. Takes a lot of time, training and skill to be a good cop. This is not a good time to be one anyway. Politics get in the way, assholes are back on the street in hours.
So what’s the problem? Why the need for deputizing citizens? If they don’t have enough cops, hire more.
A man has to know his limitations ... if you think you would not make a good reserve deputy, do yourself a favor and don't apply to be one. HOWEVER: also do not project your perceived limitations onto other people. That's what leftists anti-gun activists do.
“They know they need more troops in the event that the shit hits the fan and the 2nd comes into play.”
Such as when our “Newcomers” have their credit cards canceled and become homeless and hungry?
Not having adequate policing will definitely lead to vigilantism. For details, consult John Locke.
Suffolk red? The Hamptons? Hempstead? Isn’t that where the limo liberals live?
Hempstead no…..the Hamptons yes .
2 different counties.
….
I think at one time I would have make a good cop, and I don’t project my “percieved limitations” on anyone. I’m just an average guy like most. Done with this tread as well, but just one thing..I still think the best solution is more, well trained cops, and the folks running the place are not spending where they should be. Period.

Better than thinking regular armed citizens are “trigger happy” and thinking all they’re good for it so be trained to “fight bath-salt crazies”.
I guess a true omnivore will, once in a while, dine on its own 💩 instead of realizing it bit the wrong thing.
You seem to have a fecal fetish. Born in a barn maybe?
The two cops attacked in NYC by a crowd of illegals (who, BTW, have been offered plea deals) wouldn’t even shoot a few in self-defense. Non-starter.
Hempstead is in Nassau County and any lib vacationing in the Southampton area is likely from NYC or out-of-state. Suffolk is indeed a Red county.
