New York county executive plans to ‘deputize’ select gun owners

A New York county executive plans to "deputize" legal gun owners to help law enforcement officers during emergencies, but the move is facing pushback from critics who say it will lead to acts of vigilantism.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said the deputies must be over 21 years old, be U.S. citizens and Nassau County residents, undergo a full background check, take a drug test and have a valid firearm license. They would be paid $150 a day for their service, according to the plan.

"They will have to be trained on the law and use of force," Blakeman, a Republican elected to the county's top post in 2021, told CBS News New York on Sunday. "And if I were to use them, it wouldn't be for normal police functions. It would be for protecting infrastructure like hospitals, power plants, mosques and synagogues, and things of that nature so that we could free up our police officers to do other work."

Over 100 people submitted applications for the openings after Blakeman and Nassau County Sheriff Anthony LaRocco posted an advertisement on the county’s website in March seeking candidates for "Provisional Emergency Special Deputy Sheriffs."

So, reserve deputies. This is nothing new, at least in Texas.

And there is absolutely zero constitutional justification for federal police forces or police powers

Actually to a degree there is. The Constitution says the President has "shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed"(Article II section 3) which implies the ability to enforce, and George Washington himself led the military to enforce collection of alcohol excise taxes during the Whiskey Rebellion.

But a strict reading of the Constitution would strike down most federal laws as unconstitutional.

Actually it makes perfect sense. Maybe you should do some research. There are millions of citizens carrying firearms right now. How many of them are “trigger happy?” Yep, zero.

There are also millions of gang bangers and criminals carrying guns. Wanna hazard a guess on trigger happiness among them? Yep, much higher and with zero training.

...today’s NYC cops are overpaid. On a 5 day week and 52 weeks a year cops earn approximately $504.00 per day (i.e $126,000 per year).

When you add pensions and other benefits it’s way more than that.

The taxpayers quite simply cannot afford more COPS. We will have to transition to a combination of quasi volunteers (i.e. low paid, no pensions) and full time professional cops.

How do you know that? Do you carry?

That’s not at all what he said. Not even a little bit. These folks would protect infrastructure from looters... Just like the rooftop Koreans did in LA or those black folks in WI during the BLM riots. Geez.

In 1845 City of New York petitioned NY State Legislature to
Form a police dept. So for 50 years everybody in NY City had guns and they didn’t need a police force...I wonder why?

Ok. But you know what happens to cops when something goes wrong? They’re the first ones to get screwed. I can imagine what would happen to a “deputized” one. If they are ex-military, I think that could work. Also, this is a different world today, our colleges are testimony. I still say hire real cops, or train them to be real cops, I think that’s the best solution. Imho.

Ok, so get rid of those police officers who risk their lives daily, because you must “defund” them because far left wing nuts say you have to, then when crime goes up hire trigger happy citizens for $150 a day. With a little training, send them out to fight bath salted crazies. Makes perfect sense right?

You don't know what you are talking about.

I live in this county. I don't recall the police here being defunded.

I believe Nassau County has the second highest county law enforcement spending per capita in the country.

Once again you should know what you are talking about before you post here and welcome to FR.

Another one.

Nassau County did not defund the police. They are the second leading county IN THE COUNTRY per capita that funds the police.

Yeah, if that is a requirement walk away. I have a right to have a gun, you have no right to tell me otherwise.

Spending? Or actual cops on the street? Sounds like they’re not spending it very well. And...ok, don’t know whether or not you’re being rude or not about what I should know but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and thank you for the welcome. I’ve been here before, years ago. By the way, I spent over 11 years as a consultant to the N.J. State Judiciary, New York’s neighbor and liberal ally. It is unbelievable the waste I’ve seen in spending.
