DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is planning to raise money for former President Donald Trump in the coming weeks, putting into action the commitment he made at a meeting with Trump last month to help his former rival for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details have not been finalized and plans could still shift in the weeks ahead. Still, DeSantis is making calls to donors while his finance team works quickly to put together a schedule that would include stops in Florida and Texas, the people said.

DeSantis is taking concrete steps toward a political reconciliation with Trump, who for months taunted his GOP opponent as “DeSanctimonious” as the Florida governor argued Trump’s time had come and gone. The developments also show DeSantis’ effort to offer among his most prized assets — his prolific fundraising network — in a gesture that could pay dividends if he runs for president again in 2028

Going back a bit further, in 1963 LBJ got the Presidency. In 1974 Gerald Ford got the Presidency without being elected as VP or Prez.

Very true. However, I was addressing the likelihood of an elected VP later being elected president (which is why I dropped Rockefeller from the list).

However, you address a larger point: things sometimes happen to presidents. Go back a few more years, and you get a couple more assassinated presidents, and plenty die in office, some from stupidity (William Henry Harrison). Trump is healthy, but he could die, and now is NOT the time to be stuck with Tulsi Gabbard to carry the MAGA mantle.

An elected VP has as much claim to the leadership of a movement as anyone else who isn't an elected president.

That would be a disaster if tulsi ended up president. Holy cow. Yes she has a few good attributes, but not even half on the issues.

But we’re only talking 2028 and DeSantis. If Desantis isn’t VP he will more than likely have to fight who does become Trump’s VP as that person probably will run for president in 2028 and have Trump by his side. So essentially DeSantis will be running against Trump AGAIN while in office, the leader of the party and as a successful President. Good luck with that.

I don’t have a crystal ball. Who knows how it will play out. Maybe the economy will tank in 2025. Anything can happen.

Desantis is the 3,000 foot guy, Trump likes to oversee everything at about 300,000 feet.

I would still support Desantis for VP with Trump, although my favorites remain Byron Donalds, Ben Carson, and Donald Trump Jr.
