Right. It’s the old “reign but not rule”. And under normal circumstances, that’s a good thing. I actually looked it up awhile back. The last time a British monarch used a royal reserved power was around 1700.

But my goodness. At what point does the monarch have to say something publicly to save his country? And by “something”, I don’t mean a weak suggestion. I mean something bold.

It’s an imperfect analogy, but suppose a car is heading right towards a cliff. A passenger is not supposed to interfere with the driver. But at what point should the passenger in the front seat reach over, turn off the keys, and press down on the brake?
