We’re environmentalists: America’s haphazard plastic bag bans are not working
The Hill ^ | 05/10/2024 | BRAD LISKI AND LASSE GUSTAVSSON

If you’ve visited a grocery store in the last year, chances are high that you saw single-use plastic bags swapped for another reusable bag (also made with plastic, but we’ll get to that later). Or maybe your local grocery store hasn’t even made this trade-off, despite the law stating they must do so. On your walk home from that very store, you probably saw plastic bags still littered along the street.

This is all part of the current problem with single-use plastic bans on bags, straws and takeout containers across the U.S. They are disjointed and, for the average person, pretty confusing to understand — which is why they’re not working.

It’s commendable that states have taken the initiative to develop these bans, but they ultimately highlight the urgent need for national coordination in addressing plastic pollution in a way that has a long-term impact.

Plastic bags are illegal in California.

I must live in the wrong place. I never see plastic bags or much of anything else strewn across the landscape. We can still get plastic bags here, some places anyway, and I always make very good use of them (cleaning up after 4 dogs takes a few lol).

Since when? If they are, then I guess they forgot to tell all the stores in SoCal that. Only thing that has changed is they charge you for every plastic bag that you use - 10-15 cents each. Plastic straws, OTOH, are banned outright.

The two authors of the shpeel:

Brad Liski is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Tru Earth. Lasse Gustavsson is the president and chief executive officer of the global conservation organization Ocean Wise.

In other words - activists paid by their NGOs to be activists

I know! Someone on this thread seems to think that plastic bags are illegal in California. I have no idea what they’re talking about.

I don’t think you get charged for the thin plastic bags, just the heavy duty ones. And I’m drinking an ice tea from Panda Express right now with a plastic straw

California is one of 12 states, plus over 500 communities in the US who been single use plastic bags. My experience is that California stores offer heavier, weight reusable plastic bags that they charge for at the registers. So I make a habit of keeping a stash of single use bags in my truck so that when I go to California and go to a store I carry those in to use. I do not like paying five or $.10 or more for a plastic or paper bag.

"Yep! We were accused of killing tress with paper bags.

When the stores changed to plastic, then we were told paper bags were more eco-friendly.

Now, we have to use thick, reusable bags. Someday, we’ll be told they’re destroying the environment."

We were told that the thick reusable bags spread Covid 19.

“No more cheap plastic bags tearing”

Never once had a plastic bag tear. Their shear resistance is really high. Paper bags do tear practically by just looking at them.

Your canvas bag is filthy and a health hazard to other shoppers.

I bought most of my grocery staples at Walmart, and their bags seriously suck!
