During the Carrington Event, telegraphers were getting shocked and even though they turned the machines off the solar energy was still giving them power. Several telegraphers in Boston and Maine communicated with each other for several hours wth the machines turned off.People need to understand in our digital age, with fiber optics and microwave communications, we are much less susceptible to solar storms than we were in the 1960s.
Telegraph messages are no longer sent on solid core wires on telegraph poles.

But most everything is powered by power lines that are strung on poles for miles and miles. That is how most of the damage would occur. Thinks hooked to the power grid. That includes cell towers. Cable amplifiers. Home and business electronics, and on and on.

The electrical supply to homes and businesses is ripe for a fire. The large transformers that carry power across the grid are very exposed. We are much more wired as a civilization than we were i 1859.
