Earth could suffer the worst solar storm in 165 years as six streams of plasma that erupted from the sun this week are set to make crash into our atmosphere tonight.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revealed Friday that the worst-case scenario would be what happened during the 1859 Carrington event, which set telegraph stations on fire, cutting communications worldwide.
In our modern-day society a geomagnetic storm - a major disturbance of Earth's magnetosphere- of that magnitude would cause widespread electrical disruptions, blackouts and damage to critical infrastructure.

Reports from UK, Ireland and France indicate a huge auroral display in past two hours (it is midnight there). Not just in northern skies but overhead and all over the sky. People are very impressed with it.

The electrical supply to homes and businesses is ripe for a fire. The large transformers that carry power across the grid are very exposed. We are much more wired as a civilization than we were i 1859.

Amazing! Â To heck with the Great Pyramid of Giza. Â Ten generations the house will still be standing.
Like we said in basic training, grounded to inspection side.

Grounding does nothing to protect equipment from damaging power surges of the type that would occur in Carrington Event. Only electronic devices designed to clamp over voltage and interrupt power to a device could help with that.I'm sorry to have to tell you this but the world of 1859 is not the same world we live in now. Â We'll soon see if the Carrington Event back then equates to the end of civilization you seem to think will happen tonight.

I'm not saying that transformers will not blowup. Â That happens without a major geomagnetic storm. Â I'm saying this is not 2012 arriving late.

Latest news: The ongoing geomagnetic storm has been upgraded to level 5 out of 5, or “extreme,” making it the first G5-level storm since 2003.
Scientists are warning of potential disruptions to communications over the weekend.
GPS, spacecraft and satellite navigation may also be impacted. U.S. utility companies are monitoring the potential threat to the power grid.

The earth's magnetic field is decreasing fairly rapidly now. The consequence is less protection from solar storms. The power grid should have been fortified against EMP events long ago, but the government would rather throw money at foreign wars. Eventually we will suffer the consequences.

This one, too.
The sun is continuously erupting and hurling particles into space, but given that its 93 million miles from Earth, it rarely reaches us.

You have a reading comprehension problem. I never said I thought there was going to be Carrington event tonight. And I never said anything about the end of civilization. You made that up. I said if there was a Carrigton event. I meant in the future. As for tonight... I am not worried about it at all.
