SACRAMENTO — In May 1969 a National Guard helicopter hung over the campus of UC Berkeley, spraying protesters with what The Times then described as “heavy clouds of tear gas.” It was the sixth consecutive day of campus demonstrations over plans to develop the land known as “People’s Park.” An ambitious governor who would go on to become president had called in 2,300 National Guard troops and hundreds of Highway Patrolmen. They brought shotguns, rifles and bayonets.
The problems, then-Gov. Ronald Reagan said in a feisty televised appearance, all started because universities “let young people think they had the right to choose the laws they would obey, as long as they were doing it in the name of social protest.”
Reagan was unapologetic in his response to protests on the campus, which was also home to large demonstrations against the Vietnam War. He called student protests “orgies of destruction.”

1. Tear gas
2. Napalm
3. maybe the Chinese commies will lend us their famous Timamen Square tank?
There’s no comparison between Reagan and Nuisance. Only contrasts.
Sorry but Jan6 changed my perspective of these protests. Giving the state permission to crack down heavily on these students is giving the state permission to heavily crack down on protesters on the right. Notice the state did nothing to crack down on the psyop that was BLM even though the violence, property damage, and disruption was 100x times worse than what is currently going on. Why didn’t they crack down on BLM? What if they steal the election again and patriots raise hell about it? Well now by allowing the heavy hand of the state to crack down on protests they will crack down even harder should people protest against another steal.
We lived in Sacramento at that time. Worked downtown and saw the protestors at the Capitol Bldg., every work day. RR didn’t mess around with them. We girls used to eat lunch at the Clunie Hotel and there was an old man who hung around the hotel holding a sign protesting the governor. Local color!
Good times - good place!

I don’t think these protestors were cracked down on - certainly not HEAVILY. Many of us here would like to have seen it but it didn’t happen. Sure some were tossed to the ground and rightly so but the bulk of law enforcement - no matter what agency - stood by and took the insults from those darling children...Many warnings weren’t heeded and they still didn’t act - that’s not a criticism - but shows their self restraint and obeying orders...
Ther were too few Kent States back then, and not a single SDS or other domestic terrorist leader was shot dead.
Newsome and the Democrats fully support what the new jackboots are doing. End of story.
