Sadiq Khan’s reign in London will continue for at least another four years, as the Labour Party mayor has secured a record third term in office following Thursday’s mayoral election in the British capital.

UPDATE 1620: London Mayor Sadiq Khan has defeated his Tory challenger, London Assembly Member Susan Hall, by a margin of 44 per cent to 33 per cent, with a majority of 276,428, The Telegraph reports. Having won 1,088,225 votes to 811,518, Khan significantly improved upon his performance in his 2021 re-election bid when he only beat out Conservative Shuan Bailey by 4.7 points.

And at least one of those names should sound very familiar to anyone who's been paying attention...

In 2017 almost 40% of London’s population was foreign born.

I doubt that stat has gone down in the last seven years.

It would be a mistake to see this as directly the consequence of the Muslim vote. Although larger, pro rata, than most of the rest of the country, the Muslim population of London isn't enough on its own to swing the vote. Many British Muslims, especially the older generation, have in any case traditonally been Conservative voters.

Khan has won again because he's the official Labour candidate, and Labour has usually had a small overall majority. On each of his three wins he's also been challenged by poor Conservative opponents fighting weak campaigns - this time the weakest of the lot. He's concentrated on London-specific issues, rather than using the mayoralty as a platform for a national political profile (in contrast to his predecessor). He's always been able to present himself as a Londoner who has lived and worked in the City his entire life (father a London bus driver), again unlike his opponents.

He's always been a hate figure for the Murdoch and Rothermere press (who were responsible for the notorious 'part and parcel' misquotation), but among ordinary Londoners he seems quite popular.

Given the info contained in my reply ##22, it would be a mistake to call what just took place in London an election.

The quote in post #6 is not exact. I was careful to pick an image with no quotation marks.

But it absolutely expresses Khan‘s opinion on the matter. The actual quote is as a long one:

“Part and parcel of living in a great global city is you’ve got to be prepared for these things, you’ve got to be vigilant, you’ve got to support the police doing an incredibly hard job, you got to support the security services.”

What does he mean by “these things”? He’s talking about terrorist attacks. As I see it, Khan is saying there’s always going to be terrorism in a big city (NYC, London, etc.). So deal with it.

So, yeah. I stand by my post. Your mileage may vary.

Side point: There were no major terrorist attacks in big cities say, 50 years ago. Funny how Khan didn’t touch on that.

Not this again. Voting was by paper ballot, counted by hand.

...Record Third Term in Office

Anyone else remember "Turn again, Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London Town"?

That experiment was abandoned after one trial. This year was the first time a first past the post (rather than proportional) election has been held for the Mayoralty, and counting was by hand at 14 centres.

The context was an unscripted interview on a New York radio station, where he happened to be visiting the day after the Manhattan trash bin bombs. For a responsible official to say that, at a time when such attacks were cropping up all over the place post-9/11, constant vigilance about the risk is essential, was surely simply a statement of common sense. It’s the omission of the ‘vigilant’ clause in the misreporting which completely changed the tone.

Obviously, Sadiq has never been to, or heard of Tokyo, Japan. Very large population, very dense, but extremely low crime and very safe. Also; a very homogeneous society with strong cultural values. Not much “diversity” in Japan.
