Stellantis Hiring Engineers in Low-Wage Brazil, India, Mexico After Laying Off 400 American Engineers

Multinational automaker Stellantis is making a big hiring push for low-wage engineers in Brazil, India, Mexico, and Morocco after laying off 400 Americans in its engineering, software, and technology departments in March.

On March 22, Stellantis executives announced that 400 salaried engineering and software employees in Auburn Hills, Michigan, would be laid off to cut costs. An industry insider told Automotive News that Stellantis is making gradual layoffs in the United States to avoid WARN Act disclosures.

Following layoffs of its American employees, Stellantis executives are looking to hire engineers for a fraction of the cost by hiring in Brazil, India, Mexico, and Morocco. Whereas Stellantis must pay American engineers $150,000 to $200,000 salaries, the automaker can pay engineers in low-wage countries just $53,000 a year.

“I stick with Toyota/Lexus now.”

Same here. I bought my wife a RX-350, what a great car! I got a chance to get under it at the dealership when we had it in for service. Anything that would ever need to be fixed is easily accessible with hand tools. Same thing under the hood after you remove the engine cover. Lexus is currently rated #1 in the automotive industry, Toyota is #2. The only time I ever drive it is when it needs gas or service.

Yep, about 4 years ago I picked up a high mileage (156K)/”cream puff” 2015 RX-350 for pretty cheap at the local Lexus dealer after I had a look at the service records (20-something commuter lady had “driven the the wheels off” going back & forth to the Bay Area from the CA central valley)...she had all service done at the dealer including tires (she got robbed by the Lexus dealer...$2,200. for 4 Michelin tires) & battery, etc.. The RX now has 171,000 miles and I have just put new wiper blades on it since buying (+ oil changes & air filters). So 171K miles with just tires, a battery, filters, and wiper blades. Used to be a MOPAR guy (my grandfather who taught me car repair on my “in High School” ‘65 Plymouth Fury III as a teen was a MOPAR fan) but the ‘90’s/early 2000’s Chrysler T&C minivans I owned soured me on the brand. (Post “Lee Iacocca” and at the start of “Fiat”).

Consumer Reports says so.

Could be.

That was an initial dependability survey for vehicles less than one year old.

Stellantis brands are further down the list for older vehicles.

One of my former coworkers bought a 1990 Lexus 4 door sedan that had around 50k miles in it. It was one of the first models that Lexus sold in the states. It was six years old and was well cared for. He drove it to work and everywhere else. I talked to him awhile back and asked him about the car. His grandson was currently driving it with over 450k miles on it. The only things that had been done to the car other than regular maintenance and replacing the usual stuff that wore out was fixing oil leaks and rebuilding the suspension.

Pretty much any vehicle is going to make it to 3 years/36K miles (warranty/lease period) w/o major issues...I want to see the 8-10 year/100K dependability study! (Most KIA’s will have been stolen by the “Kia Boyz” by then & declared “KIA” by the insurance co.!) 😲

I guess one could look at the cost of one term extended warranties.

What seriously worries me is that with all this outsourcing, we aren’t growing our own next generation of engineers.
