An autistic Florida teen who knocked a school staffer unconscious for threatening to take away his Nintendo Switch has filed a lawsuit against the district, accusing them of failing to meet his needs.

Brendan Depa, 18, was just 17 when he was caught on video pummeling a teacher's aide, Joan Naydich, at Matanzas High School after she requested another teacher take away his gaming console.

Depa was arrested and charged as an adult with aggravated battery on a school employee, a first-degree felony carrying a potential sentence of 30 years behind bars.

#12: "funny how they are only retarded when they commit a crime!"

They take the most picayune accomplishment and paste a cap and gown on it.

That late violent Ferguson tard was placed in a two week course for "life skills" which earned him this souvenir picture:

Decisions made 400 years ago on this continent are coming back to haunt us in numerous, unpleasant ways.

My nephew has autism and is drummer in a world famous band where his therapy is playing (and being fawned over by the teenage girls). He’s happy go lucky but with strict, home schooling parents. My ex-boss’s kid, on the other hand, also has autism at the same age and all he does is play video games. He’s a spoiled little a-hole who triggers easily as his parents let him slide on everything. I know these are anecdotes and severities are aka “spectrum”, but I wonder if there’s a component to level of discipline?

I remember when you never even heard of autism.

Look at this:

In the mid-1960s, the autism rate was 1 in 10,000. By 2012, it had shot up to 1 in 88. In 2016, it was 1 in 68, and now it’s 1 in 44 8-year-olds

 Rates vary widely from state to state. In California, where incidence is the highest, 1 in 26 8-year-olds has a diagnosis of autism. Missouri, which has the lowest incidence, has a rate of 1 in 60

 Improved diagnosis alone cannot explain this trend. Genetics play only a minor role, and even then, primarily only when combined with toxic exposures

 Glyphosate appears to be a leading contributor to autism

 Other contributing factors include maternal antibodies associated with autoimmune diseases, maternal immune system overactivation and mitochondrial dysfunction (typically involving electron transport chain overactivity). Mitochondrial abnormalities are suspected of being involved in as many as 80% of cases

Violent hulking autistic boys should be put down or incarcerated until they’re too old to hurt anyone.

I liked the cartoon with the caption, “Ma’am, we have checked your son for everything, and none are the problem. Your son is just a little asshole.”

Thank you!

The only time my son got violent was when his friends were on the receiving end of bullying. He would beat the bullies.

When he was in the 5th grade, a bunch of kids were picking on his friend. They stole his Keychain and would not give it back, taunting him with it until he cried. My little man jumped in, took it back, gave it to his friend, and then placed his friend in the corner of the room and shielded him, taking all the blows for him from the gang of brats.

He’s going to that friend’s high school graduation party in May.

Another time, in high school, a kid had been picking on a different friend all year (smacking his head, pushing stuff off his desk, nasty names). Finally, my son told this guy that if he touched that young boy again, my son would make him pay.

“What are you going to do?” the bully sneered.

My son yanked this bully out of the desk, grabbed him by the throat, slammed him against a wall, and proceeded to wail on him. The bully was a good six inches taller and was taken completely by surprise.

His friend’s parents took him out to an arcade as a thank you.

My son was suspended per school policy; however, even the Vice Principal stated that all the witness accounts confirmed that the bully had been tormenting this kid for months but only my son was brave enough to do something about it.

I reject the validity of the law suit, but there is some basis for believing that special education could do with less effort to impose discipline as if they are normal kids. On a small scale so far, some teachers and districts have experimented and found success with a policy of letting kids do as they please so long as they do not disrupt the class.

The interior life of many special education kids is filled with anxiety and poor impulse control. And it seems that letting them destress in the classroom as they need actually improves their conduct. In effect, if a kid feels a need to use Nintendo or tear up sheets of paper into tiny bits or stare out the window, then let them. When they feel ready and able, they usually reengage with lessons.

Yep. EVERYONE is on the “spectrum” now. It used to be that autism was so rare it was scarcely mentioned.
