Sen. Cornyn ‘not too worried’ about possible challenge from Texas AG Ken Paxton

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is “not too worried” about a possible primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, he told a local news anchor Friday evening.

“I’m not too worried about it. My last election, I had a primary. I had several primary opponents, and I got 76% of the vote,” Cornyn said, responding to the anchor’s question about the primary challenge. “And so, I realize I’m not going to get 100% of the vote. And contested primaries actually make you a better candidate in the general election, in my experience.”

The Texas anchor followed up with Cornyn, asking, “Do you have a working relationship with the attorney general?” while noting that both Cornyn and Paxton like to “spar” on social platform X.

“Well, there’s a lot we agree on. And, and, you know, having held that job for four years as the chief law enforcement officer for the state, I have strong feelings about how that job should be performed. But now my job is different. And it’s to represent all of us here in Texas and work with all of our elected officials, including the attorney general,” Cornyn responded.

Paxton said Cornyn has “been in Washington too long” and has “never really had competition,” during an interview with Tucker Carlson in September 2023.

“He’s worked for what, 14 years or so? And I can’t think of a single thing he’s accomplished for our state or even for the country, let alone the fact that we have a massive invasion into our state,” Paxton said.

In the 2020 primary, Cornyn got like 80 percent of the vote. People in TX are clueless about his voting record.

“And, and, you know, having held that job for four years as the chief law enforcement officer for the state, ”

He never spent a day in his life as a law enforcement officer. He was a state judge and on the state Supreme Court. What is it about prosecutors? They love calling themselves law-enforcement officers, notice that you never see police officers refer to their self as a prosecutor? Cops prosecute the vast majority of their own cases. You always see DAs pretending to be cops, but you never see cops pretending to be lawyers.

Same with the stream of judges, bankers, and prosecutors who head of the FBI. They always like to call them selves a cop.

And should anyone expect him to say anything different?

Would a corrupt career politician ever admit nervousness over an upcoming election?

People need to be reminded that Cornyn is responsible for the law that Biden is using to restrict gun sales. The Democrats wouldn’t tackle that on their own, so they got Cornyn to do it for them.

He will follow the Lindsey Graham plan. Load up the primary with nobodies and walk away a winner..
Paxton can win man to man.

Tea Party groups in Texas worked hard to defeat Cornyn in the 2014 primary by supporting a good challenger, Steve Stockman. We got Cornyn’s vote down to 59% in the primary, which is low for an long-term incumbent. Cornyn is strongly supported by the lobbyists and special interests making it hard to get rid of him.

I met Cornyn at the Texas Republican Convention in 2002 when he won his first primary. I didn’t like him then and have not liked him since that time.

Our Senator Ted Cruz does a good job being visible, available and active in promoting Republican priorities and fighting the left. Cornyn has been AWOL since the beginning.

He should be. He’s none too popular with Texans. I think he gets tossed out on his backside in the next primary.

I think the only reason Paxton would not defeat Cornyn in the primary would be that Paxton was too busy being Trump’s Attorney General and didn’t run.
