It was the M1A1 in WWII and became the M101 in 1962, I’ve used it and liked it a lot.

M1A or M1A1 has been used as a designator for many a weapons type, especially in WWII.... (Thompson MG, Carbine Paratrooper, 75mm Howitzer, etc.)
