Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) found himself in an unusual position for a minority leader last week:
It was he, not the House speaker, who had the ultimate power to decide whether legislation came to the floor.
Why it matters: Democrats got everything they wanted – a $95 billion foreign aid bill, the credit for passing it, and adversaries more divided than ever. In their telling, that total victory wasn't a sure thing.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a master legislative tactician, heaped praise on her successor: "He is fabulous. We're so proud of him."
One senior House Democrat told Axios: "It easily could have fallen apart ... He played the cards the way you'd want to play them."
"I would not want to play blackjack against him," the lawmaker added.

Yes, Paul Ryan & Co most recently purposely squandered our best opportunity.
“Paul Ryan & Co most recently purposely squandered our best opportunity”
You use the word “our” as if you and Paul Ryan were in a joint enterprise.
People here do this all the time, they refer to the GOP, however many times they get stabbed in the back, with words like “we” and “us”.
They are blind on purpose to what the GOP is and the role they are playing in destroying the nation, and they give them their precious votes over and over again.
I suggest a slight revision: they WOULDN’T lead.
I will vote for Trump but NOT ONE REPUBLICAN down ticket.
I will NOT vote for Mark Green TN 7th or Sen. Marsha Blackburn this fall .
Yes. They sabotaged Trump between 2017 and 2019. That disgusting piece of crap Paul Ryan.
Then John “rot in hell” McCain stabbed us in the back on repealing Obamacare.
The imaginary GOP ran around wanting “repeal and REPLACE!”
The Dems are like that gay staffer sodomizing that guy on video in the Senate. The GOP was happily on the the receiving end.
Bunch of catchers.
Ten years ago I said we need a new party or we will regret it. Now we have no party.
On Inauguration Day 2017 I posted here that Trump had six months to denounce the GOP and recruit 435 patriots willing to run for the House in November 2018, and that if he did not the GOP, especially Pence, McConnell and Ryan would ruin his term in office.
Result: D+40 in the House, and the end of any chance to get anything done.
This November may be worse.
And - I understand he was not prepared to be President in this political system. I understand that he thought it was like a hostile business takeover and the Republicans in Washington were like managers who would report Monday morning for new marching orders from the new CEO.
But it doesn’t matter. What matters is that for some inexplicable reason he trusted the Republicans, even though he wasn’t one of them, and even though he could never have become President without blue-collar Democrats.
“There is a tide in the affairs of men which, when taken at the flood, leads on to fortune…”
Sadly, there are no second acts, and the people who subverted his first term are now much more powerful and determined.
All the promise of Mike Johnson’s speakership crumbled to dust over the weekend, as Johnson gave Democrats everything they wanted on Ukraine, FISA, and more without a single concession on the border. Charlie Kirk tries to pick up the pieces and ask: Do Democrats already run the House again? Rep. Thomas Massie weighs in, and Sen. Mike Lee explains a possible Hail Mary to save the day in the Senate.
If that happened, though, who do you think will pick up most of the tab for the “Ukranian Marshall Plan” for the rebuilding and reconstruction of Ukraine?
Don’t hold your breath.
They already have taken it all. You haven’t noticed that yet?
Yeah, it won’t happen. Ukraine will not win the war. Possibly the one thing that the money buys is America’s out from the debacle. I think America has secretly been giving shell to Ukraine all along, and this money will stay home and pay for that. The account is now closed on Ukraine. I could be wrong on that. I’m sure Zelinsky needs to pay for his private security, the people around him and estates that he owns. So it’s going to be used for everything but what it was intended for. Who will build up Ukraine after the war? Russia and China, I suspect.
Wise words my friend. Pity no one, especially Trump, did not take heed.
I don’t understand why the Republican Party even exists. They hate you! Isn’t it obvious by now? The ONLY time when you get a semblance of respect or appreciation is when they need money or your vote. Even at those time its all they can do to hide their contempt.
It wasn’t that they couldnt. They chose not to. Uni Party contempt.
Its rank and file voters like you that give the Pence, Ryan, Bush elite Rino Uni Party cabal complete glee in twisting the knife in our backs. They know you will NEVER do a damn thing about it.
So get over it? Not bloody likely. So glad I left the Republican Party. Best decision I ever made!
“I don’t understand why the Republican Party even exists. They hate you! ...”
They exist to give the illusion of choice. The deep state / globalists run things, and they don’t want the unwashed getting riled up, so they offer Republicans as a choice. It’s clear you and I agree that Republicans are simply Democrats of another stripe.
So what if Jeffries gained the speakership. Would we notice any difference?
Nothing would be different and MAGA would actually do better running against Jefferies in November.
