US Navy mocked for image of captain firing gun with back-to-front scope

The US Navy has been mocked for posting a photo online of a sailor shooting a rifle with a back-to-front scope, in what social media users said showed America was “going to lose a major war”.

The Navy’s official Instagram page issued a photo of Commander Cameron Yaste, the captain of the guided-missile destroyer USS John S McCain, shooting a rifle with a backwards-mounted scope.

The image, also sent as an official press release, was captioned: “From engaging in practice gun shoots, conducting maintenance, testing fuel purity and participating in sea and anchor details, the #USNavy is always ready to serve and protect.”

Social media users and other branches of the US military quickly mocked the image, in which Commander Yaste was also using a scope with the lens cap still attached.

The US Marines posted a separate image of a marine holding and firing a rifle correctly.

What seems to me that he pissed off the ranks and was set up. Now he might have put the scope on himself, but the ranks let him make appear the fool. Again it could be he’s such a pompous ass that he would not let people correct him, but it appears to me the crew does not like or respect him.

The Academies and the OCS programs are not training warriors. Uniformed officers are no longer required or even permitted to care sidearms. Doubt most have basic familiarity or proficiency with most rifles.

This is why the Navy’s first rule in a firefight is “Send in the Marines”.

They should check to see which way that captain has his missiles pointed.

There should be an armorer on that ship that knows better. Your theory may be right: somebody doesn’t like Captain Queeg.

Although, firearms experience or not, there should be a basic man card requirement to realize the lens caps are still on.

Seems fitting.

I’m thinking there’s a CPO that might be in a world of sht over this. Don’t know if the skipper keeps a rifle in his quarters or if all are kept in the small arms locker. Either way the Master at Arms jas some explaining to do. At the very least the CO should get half the bet amount.

He’s got to have mad bionic vision be sight a target though a backward scope. That’s some serious marksman handicapping right there.

Kind of hard to miss the ocean even with a ¼x scope.

To be fair, I believe the report was that he was firing at a ‘large target balloon’. I do not know what that looks like.

BTW, it’s a real FR hoot when claims of Photoshop or that the VCOG scope is mounted correctly show up!

For the sharp-eyed who have pointed out that this scope doesn't have any rings, if it's the model I think it is, they don't. But inasmuch as the good Commander appears to have discharged the rifle in the absence of a visual acquisition of the target (that's hard to do with the scope covers secured) I can only suggest that perhaps he's a complete drooling idiot. I've known a number who were. I shall admit that I was in commissioned service before this individual was born, but back then you had to qualify with both rifle and pistol in training even if you were running an ice cream barge.

It was not mentioned whether the shooter managed to hit the ocean, but Sgt York is crediting with saying that some of his fellow soldiers could miss everything but the sky. So we're not sure.

Scary that this guy commands a modern warship. I bet he scored high on the Pronouns and DEI tests.

Captain Crunch is not a captain. He is a commander. You would think the people who draw him would give him four stripes on his sleeves by now.

It is even more scary that an idiot like Biden is in charge of a country and that its citizens accept him without question.

Actually the hand on the guys sholder is disturbing. I don’t usually let people lurk behind me on the firing line.
