Kari Lake makes calls to legislators in push for repeal of Arizona abortion ban she previously backed

Senate candidate Kari Lake has made calls to state lawmakers to push for the repeal of Arizona's Civil War-era abortion ban, according to a Republican legislator who spoke about receiving a call from her.

The GOP-controlled Legislature is considering its next steps after the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state's 1864 near-total ban on abortion is enforceable. The Arizona House convenes again Wednesday.

Lake's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening on her lobbying of state lawmakers.

Lake, who has said she opposes the court's ruling, is among the many Arizona Republicans who have scrambled to distance themselves from the 19th century statute, despite having previously voiced support for it. Democratic Senate candidate Ruben Gallego has highlighted Lake's earlier comments about the ban.

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who has urged the Legislature to repeal the law, said Thursday that calling a special session would not be useful now because “the votes obviously are not there.”

Hobbs said she is in discussion with Republican lawmakers and leadership to repeal the ban but declined to name any legislators.

Republicans in Arizona hold slim majorities in both chambers — a 31-28 advantage in the House and a 16-14 seat advantage in the Senate.

Democrats never attack fellow Democrats. That is a Republican only level of idiocy.

Democrat Internet operatives also attack Republicans.

“ You’re making my point for me.
If the people want abortion we haven’t been convincing enough that the life of the unborn is precious. If we are forced to go against our values in order to win elections that means we have lost the debate that really matters.”

That’s correct

If you don’t win elections, you’re just going to get a whole lot more people killed. Do the math, Moral Orel!

“ sway as many as you can to your position”

Re visit the foundation

Leaders represent their constituents. They’re not there to sway.

People want less government then they demand that politicians change the minds of the opponents.

It has not worked in 55 years of abortion. Suddenly Kari lake is going to succeed? In a state where the powers have cheated her out already?

It’s silly

“Sure, only a little murder is ok then. Btw how’s the GOP on principles in general. Didn’t they just pass FISA? A faithless party”

It’s not ok at all. And, yes they did pass FISA. I thanked David Schwiekert personally this morning for siding with Andy Biggs on his attempted amendment. It failed.

It’s truly disappointing. Kari Lake will probably let us down on some issues, but I will still vote for her. I used to think we should just vote for folks who reflect our principles only- but different people have different principles and when you’re dealing with outright crazy (Hobbs) I have to go with someone who will at least hit back on the majority of things I believe in.

> Considering how many women are serving in Congress and in state legislatures, good luck with that.

I think being homicidal disqualifies you from voting, we need Reconstruction 2.0 to gradually let Women vote again after they vow to honor the Fifth amendment since life cannot be taken without due process.

Unless its something that blatantly violates the Constitution and civil society such as making people the personal property of others.

The last time that happened a Civil War resolved the issue.

And Lake is presented with a situation that you don't understand. There was an existing 15 week law in AZ.

The “law” that you are referring to, explicitly stated within it that it did not overturn the older law. That’s why the AZ Supreme Court re-constituted the older law. Read this, from back when the law you are referring to first passed:

https://www.npr.org/2022/03/24/1088623491/arizona-abortion-ban-15-weeks

QUOTE:

The bill explicitly says it does not overrule a state law in place for more than 100 years that would ban abortion outright if the Supreme Court overrules Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that enshrined the right to abortion in law.

Don’t get me wrong. If I lived in Arizona I would still vote for Kari over the Dem. I just disagree with her tactics. Showing your willingness to compromise your principles is not a way to win elections.

Are u forgetting the Obama/Clinton primary? But in general democrats don’t have deep ideological divides. Until the last 8ish years, this forum was an outlier in the party.

so you’re going to try to use Lake’s latest complete capitulation on abortion

Complete capitulation? Not hardly and not remotely.

The repeal of the 1860s law as she suggests would make it barred after 15 weeks (which I agree is too long, but it is politically defendable), where not repealing it will likely go as it did in Ohio where the nutters scare everyone to removing all limits.

Only about a third support a 100% ban, and even then only if it is said in specific ways.

Roe was first trimester then the states decide. That’s 12 weeks.

Codifying people as personal property is pragmatic, got it.

The first trimester is prior to 14 weeks, except that Casey allowed essentially unfettered abortions.

That said, there are also each personal, reasonable, and political standards. All of those are 15 weeks or less.

Relatively few people agree with either barring all abortions, or allowing full-term abortions. The best range is the one which sustainably minimized abortions. Politically, this is generally within the 6w to 15w range, in many places closer to the lower end of that range.

Having limits after 15w as being doable, but insisting on 0 weeks, gets you 40 weeks in the current environment. Politicians should set the limit to where the people are, then work on convincing them to lower it.

There’s a better chance the 2nd Amendment would be repealed if that kind of thing becomes a movement.
