You have to read the whole article to get to the section that discusses how not too many blocks west of the blighted area revitalization is occurring.
The population has gone from 857,000 and 82% white in 1950 to 293,000 and 42% white today. It’s a ghost town.
There’s got to be some really cheap real estate there.
I had a job offer there for one of the aircraft companies. This was when the BLM riots were burning the city down. I laughed at the recruiter. He admitted they have been having a hard time finding people to work there.
Ask a yankee and he will probably say “Lo-ee-vill”. Local dialect and accent will differ. Why New Orleans can become Nawlins. In northern Ohio we say “O-hy-yo”. In the southeast it’s “O-hy-yah”.
Voting for whoever has D next to the name is the result of decades of conditioning. A reflexive response unrelated to anything resembling conscious thought.
Sadly they don’t have to. Just say “free stuff” and the idiots will vote for it everytime. The voters never learn that they are the ones who have to pay for the “free stuff.”
We lived in the far western ‘burbs from ‘66 to ‘69. It wasn’t bad back then. You were warned to keep out of East St. Louis. But going downtown was safe — ball games at the then-new Busch Stadium, concerts at Kiel Auditorium, the just-completed Arch and Gateway Park. It was quite nice.
You mean Harley-Davidstan, right? 😁
BTW I met Willie G. Davidson once at a motorcycle show back in the early 90s. Seemed like a nice enough guy.
I was born there and spent the first twenty-five years of my life in the area. It was once a great city. I used to go all over the city (except the north side) without any concern for my safety. It’s a shame how so many of our historic cities have fallen into ruin.
I grew up there. Locals say Louis, not Louee.
If you come home and your lights don’t work you been visited by illegals at work copper thieves.
Left in mid 80’s. Still some good areas then. Milw had a Socialist mayor more recently than a Republican.
I thought they were somewhat upscale for quick service.
Now if the Family Dollar shuts down they might be in trouble.
:)
My Aunt Ruth, in her late 70’s, was the last holdout to live in Milwaukee, and that was only due to health problems. She’s still in Milwaukee but at a St. Luke’s nursing facility where she’s safe (relatively!) and we don’t need to worry about her as much. She signs up for any and ALL activities. I think she’s re-living her youth. We’re so glad that she’s doing so well.
There’s a LOT about Milwaukee that I miss. It was actually a great place to grow up in the 60’s. Schools were still good, we weren’t being shot at EVERY day and I had Uncles who were either Cops, Firemen or worked for Miller Brewing. Good, SOLID people.
I’ve been back to my old neighborhood through the years for one thing or another. A neighborhood that used to be all Eastern European is now all Hispanic - but they’re keeping the place looking good, it’s not all run down, so there’s that. ;)
They are upscale. But I’ve never been a big fan. They’re expensive and the last time I was there, their “fresh cooked” bacon was undercooked and tasted like it was cooked the day before. Kinda ruined it for me. HOWEVER...the wife and our adult kids like Panera, so I go along to get along. I will say some of their pastries are great (but expensive!).
