Gov. Ron DeSantis signs legislation hiking criminal penalties for retail thieves and "porch pirates"

"We're not gonna put up with that [...] Your package is gonna be there, and if it's not, someone is gonna have hell to pay."

"We will raise penalties [...] They are going to be deterred."

"We are gonna hold people accountable."

The majority of people have porch or doorbell cameras these days. The list of reasons to get them is very long and starts with “So you can answer the door without being near the door and thus avoid being shot (even through the door) or having the cops or crooks push their way inside.”

My UPS or FedEx guys just leave packages wrapped in plastic just over the gate, or leave a note.
It is several dogs, a lot of chickens and maybe a donkey just to get to the front door.
Then you get to deal with me!
Aloha, welcome to rural Hawaii.

We all want to see people pay for their crimes, but states have only so many resources since they can’t print money like the federal government can.

Making it a capital crime won’t stop it unless the homeowners are free to shoot them. The only practical way to stop it is fear. Fear of getting your ass shot has been shown to be our most-effective deterrent.

He is earning back the respect I used to have for him, but lost when he bumbled into competing with President Trump for the POTUS slot.

It was an open primary. I'm happy DeSantis ran and learned what he needs to do in 2028.

Trump is not king and does not deserve a coronation. Anyone who thinks like that is not a conservative.

Reagan challenged a sitting POTUS, Gerald Ford, and came back 4 years later to win the nomination. DeSantis can do the same as we do not have many great conservative leaders (with the track record)

Florida has the Castle Doctrine already.

All these loudmouths on FR just want to be keyboard warriors.

Most porch thieves steal from homes when people are away at work and the house is empty. They rarely get caught in the act by the homeowner. So, the blustering keyboard avengers are just full of crap.

Increasing the penalty to felony makes it a much more serious crime. It will deter some, but not all. It will surely encourage more cameras.

In other threads, the non-conservatives tried to claim DeSantis made something illegal that was already illegal because they do not want DeSantis for 2028 as they oppose true conservatism.

To make this a Felony, how does a thief determine the value of said package?

Seems he’s doing great in FL. If he keeps this up, he could redeem himself with enough passing of time and be viable in 2028.

“Like the California thugs who were too stupid to pass math in school before they were kicked out but now are great at estimating shoplifting trash bash contents’ retail values “

Like the ghetto moms who can’t read a “Dick, Jane, and Sally” book, but become grammar gurus when it comes to naming their misbegotten offspring. Their favorite punctuation is the apostrophe.

Creating uncertainty in a ciminals' mind is a good thing....or do you want to make sure Mr Criminal has all the information before they steal the package? A liberal would mandate that the value be boldly written on the outside of the package so the thief is well0-informed.

Great thinking....

If only DeSantis listened to sane people, he would have supported Trump in 24, continued as Governor to make Florida a great place to live and work and then received Trump’s endorsement in 28.

I would have supported that 10000%.

Making it a felony makes it an entirely new ballgame in risk for the thief, police willingness to investigate and track people down, in the ability for the DA to make and negotiate sentences, even in homeowners reaction to losing a package and in preventing the thefts, it is a real crime now, something that California needs in areas like shoplifting

I don’t know why it upsets you so much and brought out the insults and hostility.

How about a felony for any judge or parole board who reduced from maximum time or sentence for any criminal that went on to commit another crime.

Because without consequences for the ass-hat judiciary, NOTHING will change.
