Trump says Arizona’s abortion ban goes too far while defending the overturning of Roe v. Wade

ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump said Wednesday that an Arizona law that criminalizes nearly all abortions goes too far and called on Arizona lawmakers to change it, while also defending the overturning of Roe v. Wade that cleared states to ban the procedure.

“It’ll be straightened out and as you know, it’s all about states’ rights,” the former president told supporters and journalists after landing in Atlanta for a fundraiser. “It’ll be straightened out, and I’m sure that the governor and everybody else are going to bring it back into reason and that’ll be taken care of, I think, very quickly.”

Though Trump has waffled on whether he supports abortion rights, he appointed three of the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade and ended a federally guaranteed right to abortion. Now facing growing political backlash as Democrats notch victories around the nation by campaigning on abortion rights, Trump increasingly has been put on the defensive and urged Republicans to avoid supporting bans that are unpopular with many Americans.

Trump issued a video statement this week declining to endorse a national abortion ban and saying he believes limits should be left to the states. His statement angered some religious conservatives and energized allies of President Joe Biden who see abortion rights as one of Trump’s weaknesses.

I watched the interview and President Trump said that the governor of AZ needs to take care of the issue (abortion too restrictive). Through it right into her lap. LOL

If the law is too restrictive, the governor of AZ and the legislature need to “fix” it. Not the President (or pResident, as we have now).

Slavery was a "state issue" too.

Actually, by the time of the 1860 election (Republican takeover of Congress and WH) the Dims had made slavery a national issue. The Dims' Fugitive Slave Trade Act of 1850 penalized people in free states for not helping capture a runaway slave. And the Dim majority Supreme Court rules in Dredd Scott that blacks are never, ever, ever going to be free American citizens.

It's very much like abortion was a national issue for the past 50 years until Trump put constitutionalists on the Supreme Court and overturned Roe. For half a century the Dims had made abortion a national issue even though the Constitution's enumeration clause says that abortion is a state issue. Only because Trump's SCOTUS picks brought abortion back to a state issue where it belongs can we say that abortion is now something that presidential candidates shouldn't push states for or against. There was nothing like that a century and a half ago overturning Dredd Scott and the Fugitive Slave Trade Act to make slavery back to being a state issue.

He’s probably giving cover the Kari Lake who complemented the law 2 years ago and now can’t get far enough away.

Wrong. Hammer them on it daily. Force the Govenor to call a special session to address the concerns of the citizens of the state. Hammer them with this. Demagogue, Demagogue, Demagogue. Trump should say, it’s a simple solution and thrlet know it but they are more concerned with 9th month abortions than fixing the glaring issues. Never offer solutions or specifics just say the Govenor my resolve this with the state legislature asap. The word of the day is demagoguery.

Only attack 9th month abortions. This is all about demagoguery. Make them look bad, offer no solutions. Try to push them to do something before voting statts

DJT really needs to stay out of it. His standard reply should be that this issue has been returned to the States by SCOTUS, and that’s where it should stay.

Views and statements in 2016, 2020, and 2024 are different, maybe evolving, but becoming less clear.

I suspect Trump doesn't agree with abortion except in the case of the life of the mother, etc. We can find statements to support this.

Trump opposed abortion when he opposed Roe v. Wade. Plenty of comments on this.

Trump celebrated the end of the Roe v Wade.

Trump criticized Virginia and others for late term and partial birth.

Trump has criticized Florida, Iowa, and now Arizona abortion limits and bans.

Trump has not stated current personal stand, limits, etc.

Left to guessing, he'll get pummeled by everyone.

Feds allow, pay, etc. abortion at federal facilities. So it is also a federal issue.

What is the real Trump? Personally agree/oppose abortion, feds in/out, states do whatever they want? And if the latter, then why criticize states?

Can Trump settle this once and for all? Doubtful, no matter what he says, someone will be upset. More clarity on the matter will solve that but he'll have to settle on upsetting one or more groups.

Ignoring it all just lets it fester and that is doom for Republicans in November.

So you’re pushing people to abandon Trump again....

You sure do seem to want the left’s idea of post birth abortions to become a reality, by keeping Trump out of office.

Trump opposed abortion when he opposed Roe v. Wade. Plenty of comments on this.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg said that Roe v. Wade was "wrongly decided." She was not pro-choice.

Trump celebrated the end of the Roe v Wade.

Actually, there were many articles about how he was furious with the Supreme Court.

So, are you saying he has to come out supporting abortion or Democrats win everything?

Look at his statement in 2000, when he didn’t “have to’ say anything.

nevertrumpers what to push Trump to declare he’ll do a federal abortion law....

Just because they know it’s just the issue that will cause him the most backlash and likely cause Trump to lose...

Because, for them, keeping Trump from getting back in office is more important than biden being re-elected.

Nevetrumpers want Trump to come out and support a federal law making abortion 100% legal from conception to full term abortion.

No, they want him to do that because that's what they believe in. I actually here the opposite of what you are saying, that Republicans, including Trump, will lose if they oppose abortion in any way.

I think pro-lifers are not asking for a federal law making it illegal, but just to stop bashing pro-life laws, and giving aid and comfort to pro-choicers.

Far to much time wasted on the abortion issue it’s been settled and it’s a state issue.

The left is seeking a way to get the tax payer to pay for it.

Planed Parenthood winks and a nod

They want back into fat city.
