Whatever the defendant says can be used against him. Even if it is hearsay. Examples of hearsay that is not allowed is a witness on the stand saying another person or witness said something.
This is spelled out in the miranda warning a person is read before any questioning while in custody.

Heresy is allowed if the point of the heresay is not to prove the subject of the heresay is true.
