Elon Musk asked why the bridge can't just be "repaired," since nearly all of the steel merely fell into the water and only one segment joint was destroyed by the ship's impact.

He was roundly ridiculed and attacked for the question. Apparently he doesn't understand how thoroughly corrupt the U.S. is, and even more so Baltimore. Silly immigrant doesn't get that every disaster is an opportunity for a fresh, multi-billion $ "request for proposal" with politically-connected contractors landing the cash, and going 2-5x over budget and time by completion, with 10-20% racial kickbacks for the chocolate city.

The bridge can’t be repaired because that open-span continuous truss design is considered outdated and not sufficiently safe anymore.
