LIVERMORE, Calif. -- Most fast food workers in California will be paid at least $20 an hour beginning Monday when a new law is scheduled to kick in giving more financial security to an historically low-paying profession while threatening to raise prices in a state already known for its high cost of living.
Democrats in the state Legislature passed the law last year in part as an acknowledgement that many of the more than 500,000 people who work in fast food restaurants are not teenagers earning some spending money, but adults working to support their families.
That includes immigrants like Ingrid Vilorio, who said she started working at a McDonald's shortly after arriving in the United States in 2019. Fast food was her full-time job until last year. Now, she works about eight hours per week at a Jack in the Box while working other jobs.
βThe $20 raise is great. I wish this would have come sooner,β Vilorio said through a translator. βBecause I would not have been looking for so many other jobs in different places.β
The law was supported by the trade association representing fast food franchise owners. But since it passed, many franchise owners have bemoaned the impact the law is having on them, especially during California's slowing economy.

Malcolm McDowell. And it WAS a good movie. Usually, I hate time travel stuff, but that was excellent.
And I won’t do kiosks to order food. Horrid technology.
As always you confirm you are a person of good taste and refinement. You agreed with me.π
That loud slamming sound is that of fast food franchises closing their doors all over California for the last time.
Economic reality can be a terrifying thing to live with, especially when the business plan is inflexible or not well thought out.
They are no waiting for April 1st, they are cutting back staff already. Wife stopped at an Arbys today and they had the drive through block so you had to go in to order. She saw only two workers one in the back and one up front. The front one was also in charge of the deep fryer so had to leave the front to take care of that as well as take and give out orders.
You can not run one of those places with just two employees.
Service is going to go down and the staff will quit.
I was at a meeting until early evening. On the way home (1 hr drive) I stopped at a McDs. Went inside, kiosks only. Only saw a couple staff, both at/near the window. Went back out to my car and got into the drive up. 2 cars ahead of me. The first one was there for over 5 minutes before I decided a couple of overpriced burgers wasn't worth it.
Yep. They want more abled bodies on the Welfare Dole dependent
on the State. Thus New Democrat voters.
Ah, but it IS bad for the world. Tens of thousands of unskilled workers will get replaced by fewer more productive workers, or by robots. Employers will not pay $20/hr to anyone not worth $20/hr. Any CEO who allowed that would soon be fired by their board of directors. They will simply recalibrate their workforces so that the only workers left are the ones worth what they are being paid.
The workers not worth $20 will be laid off and receive unemployment payments or otherwise be supported by the taxpayer. California taxpayers (already proven idiots by staying in California this long) will relocate to other less βprogressiveβ states in droves - to the detriment of every state involved.
If the βsmartestβ of the California morons move to smarter states, that lowers the average IQ of both California and the states that they flee to.
Any system that doesnβt allow markets to set prices is doomed to fail. Minimum wage is no different than any other government enforced price control - it sucks the life out of the economy by forcing suboptimal choices.
McWhopper Inc. love this invasion of millions...Endless labor with 4th grade educations...They couldn’t care less about the rest of us or the country.
Fat corps love it. They get fat, the country incrementally goes belly up. Even paying the illegals (Newcomers) 20 per hour, they’ll still make a profit. And that’s what it’s all about. The rest of America can bite concrete. We’ll just have to deal with their business model and ethics. That’s what Disney did to Anaheim. Anaheim is full of illegals now, like Santa Ana. They hire them for all the hotels, restaurants etc. Some real nasty neighborhoods in the Anaheim area nowadays. Good job Disney!
Try the new 20 dollar big mac. Drink and fries much extra.
I’ve already quit buying ‘fast food’ due to the outrageous cost, and my state’s minimum wage is ‘only’ $12 an hour. (although I think most fast food jobs here are paying $15 an hour when they can even find someone to show up).
Sometimes I wonder if California’s politicians are just totally economically ignorant, or if they know darn well that their laws are going to destroy businesses and lives, and that is the primary intent of it.
That’s kind of a funny side effect. The unhealthy food is now too expensive. The people who were broke at $10 an hour are still broke at $20 an hour. They priced themselves right back into even worse poverty.
Imagine making $20 an hour, and a Big mac is an unaffordable luxury. But back at $10 an hour, it was just cheap bad food.
..........lol, in a hurry, I will have a quarter pounder on average about once a month.
I predict thousands in California will be laid off and be replaced by coke box like dispensing machines. I ran into one of those a couple years back returning from a trip to California on I 35. I think it was near Ft. Stockton.
It was about half and half. Meaning about half the people were using the machines which WERE QUICK with no bullshit (machine doesn’t roll it’s eyes at you or cough in your food) and the other half using the live humans operating a cash register.
The true minimum wage is zero, as Milton Freedman was wont to say.
Doesn’t Bill Gates grow McDonaldβs GMO Fries ?
Now hiring: self service kiosk installers.
Friedman.
I have not ate at McD’s in over 35 years...except for one time a few years ago...It was late and had worked a 12 hr shift....Didn’t want to make something at home...And the McD’s food was horrible...
I could see from open thru lunch, closed from say 1-4 and reopens for dinner. You could probably cut 2 or 3 staff in the process.
I’ve never been a fan of “unhealthy garbage” either which is pretty much my opinion of fast fud in general. I stopped in a MuckDonalds in 1968 to give it a try. Took them a half hour to make a burger WITHOUT the standard muck soss. Stoopidest thing I ever tried to eat and I have never been back.
I pulled into one in Livingston Montana about 2000 to top off my coffee thermos: thickest, murkiest, nastiest thing I ever tried to drink. Used it to water a rest stop tree and I do apologize if it hurt the tree? Can’t use them and if they take a beating I’ll clap.
