Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg couldn’t give a time frame Sunday for when debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse will be cleared from the critical mega US shipping channel.
“We haven’t received a timeline yet,” the country’s top transportation chief told CBS’ “Face the Nation” of the massive expected clean-up of the wreckage from the destroyed Baltimore span, which runs roughly 1.6 miles over the Patapsco River, a key transportation route that handled a whopping $80 billion in cargo last year.
“This is going to be a very complex process, there are even now forces acting on that steel,” Buttigieg said. “So it takes a lot to make sure that it can be dismantled safely to make sure that the vessel stays where it is supposed to be and doesn’t swing out.”

25 feet of water——
NOT the Marianas Trench
“The supplies and ordnance for three US Marine Expeditionary forces are pre-positioned in the Port of Baltimore”
No, there isn’t.
It takes time to find a gender-fluid demolition company.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg speaking of a ramming and plugged situation…….
Due to the importance of that shipping lane, declare a national emergency and bring in the United States Naval Construction Battalions, also known as the Seabees.
They only need to get the channel cleared to reopen the port (with truck transport rerouted as necessary). But Peter will probably see to it that the channel is cleared last.
How could anyone in his position go on TV knowing he’d be asked that question and give an answer like that?
Never mind, DEI, that’s how. Proves the point.
It’s just cutting and picking up steel. Shouldn’t really be that complicated.
He doesn’t know the first thing about transportation. Probably looking for the right Affirmative Action companies.
“Math is tough for those with a fascination with trains”
How did this idiot ever graduate HS?
They don't have to clean up the whole span, just the shipping channel for now.
Cut a piece off, hoist it out with a barge with a crane. Next piece.
Correct! I am no supporter of buttygig, absolutely the opposite! And do ot take anything I am about to say as a defense of his statement.
I work in a Civil Engineering position for the Dept. of Transportation. I review and oversee multiple highway and bridge contracts every year.
There are dozens of unknown factors relating to both the removal of the debris, designing of a newer hopefully better bridge and then years for construction.
Designs for 1.6-mile-long bridges aren’t just sitting on the shelf waiting to be dropped into place. This contract is going to take a minimum of 5+ years at the very least.
Very basic, simple bridges for a minor two-lane road take that long from concept approval to design through construction.
This is going to be a massive undertaking. Anyone who says they have any clue whatsoever how long this is going to take is lying to you.
It’s amazing that most of America is incapable of doing much of anything anymore. The decline started a long time ago when they started handing out participation trophies, but has accelerated at an alarming rate since the Fauci Flu came on the scene. UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Everything govt is involved in is a very complex process. That’s the problem.
Mayor Petie has been trying to build a bridge to Uranus since he arrived in Washington.
“It’s just cutting and picking up steel. Shouldn’t really be that complicated.”
We are about to find out, they are cutting now:
I get not knowing an exact date, but you would think, you could at least give an estimate by now.
So mister pothole doesn’t really know a damn thing having to do with transportation. But he dose wear girly panties so it’s all good with the lefties.
Cranes with grappling hooks can dump the steel onto barges where it can be cut with torches into smaller easier to manipulate pieces. Some cutting will probably be done with workers in lift buckets, if any divers have to do cutting, I pray for their safety. This shouldn’t take that much time, I’m thinking a couple months, and I agree, concentrate on the channels and open up the harbor.
