From the outside, Johannesburg does not look like it is doing well.
Roads littered with potholes. Broken traffic lights not repaired for months. Rotting rubbish in the streets.
But from the inside, the scale of the problems facing the biggest city in South Africa and the richest and most industrialised in the continent is even worse.
From taps regularly running dry to daily four-hour power cuts – known locally as load shedding – life for many people in Jo’burg has declined dramatically.
The decline of southern suburb Forest Hills is a case in point.
Previously dominated by poorer white people, in recent decades it has become more mixed as black people sought to move out of the city’s apartheid-era townships.
“Although never wealthy, things used to at least work [around here],” Stuart Marais, a longtime resident and local city councillor, told The Telegraph.
“Traffic signals are regularly vandalised and are not repaired in under six to eight months. Grass is growing into our roads which haven’t been fixed for decades,” said the 63-year-old. “Broken cars lie around and many residents put their rubbish out onto the streets and it lies there rotting.”
It was “far too dangerous” to walk around at night, he said. “The decay in this part of Johannesburg is massive.”
Mr Marais says the blame lies squarely with the municipality, where the African National Congress hold the most seats.

Chris Rock was right. There are two kinds of black people. And the other ones have got to go.
Jo’burg as it is referred to in that part of the world has had issues going back at least 50 years. Flew into Johannesburg direct from Washington, DC some 15 years ago. Spent the night at a hotel in the airport complex and flew on to Maun in Botswana the next AM. After our safari camp adventure we returned thru Jo’burg on our way to Capetown. Basically we were told Jo’burg had crime issues and it was recommended that we avoid a city visit. Our overall trip to South Africa was one of our favorites, especially the safari part in Botswana.
“What did the late great Rush used to say? Undeniable fact of life or something. It adeptly describes J-burg today.”
I think he stayed clear of that topic mostly, as it is obviously radioactive to discuss (which is why it never gets addressed, by the way).
We should send them a million or two of our black people to fix the problems, we could sell it as “This is your chance to Kill Whitey LEGALLY” come get your one way tickets to South Africa where you will be the one in charge...
Why would moochers want to be in charge?
Always signs of a civilization in decay. Perhaps the ANC is not up to the task of running the city or on a larger scale, the country. Of course they are not.... the ANC is only interested in graft and getting back at whitey. Any white person in the RSA should get out if they can. I know some will stay regardless, because it has been their home for generations. But it is certainly going to get worse before it gets better. If it ever gets better. Using Zimbabwe as a recent case, it does not look good for South Africa.
Africa in general will blame all its problems for the next two hundred years on the legacy of apartheid and the artifacts of colonialism. Much as American blacks are blaming all their failings on the legacy of slavery, abolished in 1865.
I seem to recall a significant change in management there a few years ago.
It's much easier to destroy and then blame all your problems on external forces out of your control.
You talking about Baltimore?
Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) being a prime example.
Racist comment. It's not due to skin color. It's because of the culture they grew up in. There's a good explanation for that, a lot of it has to do with their history and the environment they live in. I believe that that the most advanced civilizations today came from colder and harsh climate. Germany, England, Russia, China, Japan, America. If you have to deal with long winters, it requires that your civilization having to plan ahead to accumulate reserves for the winter.
In two or three generations they will be living in mud huts and digging for grubs.
Kisangani, Lubumbashi, Kinshasa, Maputo, etc. soon to be joined by Cape Town and J-berg.
Sounds a lot like Haiti.
Like the man said when Africans take over cities and countries, #h*t happens.
Could be said of at least 20 American cities…and the reason would be the same.
Granted, skin color is largely irrelevant to demographic success, other than as an immutable characteristic subject
to discrimination.
Still.. When oriental/Chinese/Japanese people migrate, they evince more than a modicum of success in their new territory.
The climate of South Africa is very similar to that of Western Europe, and yet, the Bantu tribes that drifted in
and out of the region for millennia did not develop or adopt agriculture, metallurgy, or a written language.
Quite sad, actually.
You could say that South Africa was considered to be part of the West at the time. Apartheid was not sustainable because it made them a pariah nation. The Afrikaners were never going to institute a dictatorship like the Kims in North Korea just to keep their system going today.
I thought Cape Town was their world class city. People know Cape Town, because of its cape and its big rock and the movies filmed there. Johannesburg and the other cities didn’t make much of an impression on the rest of the world.
