Democrat wins Alabama special election in early test for IVF as a campaign issue

Democratic candidate Marilyn Lands on Tuesday won a special election for a state House seat in Alabama after she made in vitro fertilization and abortion rights central to her campaign.

Lands, a licensed professional counselor, defeated Madison City Council member Teddy Powell, a Republican who once worked as a Defense Department budget analyst. A Republican had held the Huntsville-area seat in the state's 10th District.

"Today, Alabama women and families sent a clear message that will be heard in Montgomery and across the nation. Our legislature must repeal Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban, fully restore access to IVF, and protect the right to contraception," Lands said in a statement shared by the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which supported her candidacy.

Lands had 63% of the vote to Powell's 37% with all precincts reporting.

“The voters have spoken and I’m honored to have been considered for this office," Powell said in a statement to Alabama Daily News. "I wish Mrs. Lands the absolute best as she goes on to serve the people of District 10 in the House of Representatives.”

Powell's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While campaigning, Lands focused on IVF and access to abortions, telling voters that she supports repealing the state’s near-total ban on abortions, which went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Her campaign website notes endorsements from groups such as Planned Parenthood, the Alabama AFL-CIO and the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signed a GOP-backed bill to protect IVF after widespread backlash to a ruling by the state Supreme Court in February that threatened the procedure. Tuesday's contest was seen as an early test for Democrats campaigning on IVF after the high court's ruling.

Plenty of selfish irresponsible men support abortion, plenty of heartbroken women bullied into getting an abortion. Not all men are virtuous saints, not all mwomen murderous psychopaths.

When you drank the DNC kool-aid far too often you begin to spew the same garbage from their propagandists read, next you'll tell me that 2020 was the "safest and most-secured election in human history".

Oh, I’m sure this was low-turnout election for an Alabama statehouse seat was all about abortion and IVF.

If women truly are voting for a leftist crazy person because they are afraid they might not be able to kill their unborn children, then we will richly deserve whatever disaster is coming to us.

All I can say is that if killing your own children is a winning issue, then this country deserves to fall.

My opinion also. We will have truly become the "Great Satan" if that's the case.

The more I read the more I get more and more suspicious. This is just a precursor of what’s going to happen in 2024 can you say cyber election interference? If they can control a loading boat to hit a pillar, they can easily do it in the voting machines. I do not believe for one minute that a red state would vote in a baby killer. It just doesn’t make sense. Every special election is being won by a demoncRAT ….Something is fishy something is extremely fishy. The game of steal is on! While our eyes are being diverted in other areas, these bastards are stealing, elections left and right. They are playing the game of kill and we are playing checkers. While we are riveted watching the events of Trump’s court cases and all the crap that’s hitting the fan here in America the bastard rats are quietly stealing elections. The RNC better get their act together because before you know it, this country is going to be overrun by communist rats in high offices back and funded by Soros, Bill Gates *uckerberg and the rest of the evil billionaires. I have no hope for 2024 I really don’t. Even if we have a massive turnout they will cheat because they know how to cheat by cyber election machine manipulation. And they’ll have the corrupt evil black robes already in line to take any case that the Republicans contest. 2024 is going to get massively ugly.

If the Republican party wants to jump on the pro-abortion bandwagon and scream me too, me too like their good friends across the aisle, have at it. It will do it without me. I will not peddle flesh for votes and elections.

Couldn't agree more....done playing the "lesser of two evils" BS and still getting the leftist agenda regardless of which party pulls the strings.

“I’m just tired of people here crying “vote fraud!” every time a Democrat wins a race.”

I know a guy married and divorced 5 times. Never once have I heard him consider that maybe he has something to do with all these failed relationships. It’s always the ex’s fault.

An off cycle special election for what? A state house district?

Election like that is all about turnout... I would watch the seat in the next regular cycle and see who wins it...

Given the gap in this race, I’d have to say the R candidate was a nobody/lousy candidate, or the dem machine got folks to the polls while the R’s were complacent... or both.

I wouldn’t write too much into it myself, and would just watch what happens in the next regular cycle election there.

Sigh.

Look, screaming fraud because you lose is with no basis for it is nonsense.

Know NOTHING about this district or race, but do know how these off year special elections work.

These elections boil down to turnout, because overall turnout for these things is always insanely low, meaning that vocal active minorities usually are overrepresented.

Most likely the R was a lousy candidate, and/or the R’s were complacent and did nothing to get out the vote, while the D’s got groups engaged and turned the vote out.

That’s not fraud...

Let’s see what happens in this district in the next regular cycle election... my guess is this woman will be gone just as soon as she came, if this is indeed a traditionally deep red district.

Republicans are sacrificing 2024 on the issue of abortion.

All but a handful of the farthest right people in this country consider it an issue between a woman and her doctor. The vast majority of Americans think it should be legal in the first trimester.

It is as much a losing issue for Republicans as gun control is for Democrats; fine if it’s part of your religion and you’d rather be ‘right’ than be elected.

Speak for yourself. Every Republican I know thinks if a crackhead prostitute gets pregnant, an abortion is the best option.

Who appointed you and your fellow milktoast moderates as the self-proclaimed Judge, Jury, and executioner, casting judgment on innocent lives for the actions of the guilty while absolving them of all blame?

Since you clearly don't align with the party's platform (that mentions rights of the unborn in several areas), how can you claim to be a Republican? Perhaps you and your ghoulish cohorts would find a more fitting home among the demonic Democrats, given your apparent belief in your own moral superiority.
