Democrat wins Alabama special election in early test for IVF as a campaign issue

Democratic candidate Marilyn Lands on Tuesday won a special election for a state House seat in Alabama after she made in vitro fertilization and abortion rights central to her campaign.

Lands, a licensed professional counselor, defeated Madison City Council member Teddy Powell, a Republican who once worked as a Defense Department budget analyst. A Republican had held the Huntsville-area seat in the state's 10th District.

"Today, Alabama women and families sent a clear message that will be heard in Montgomery and across the nation. Our legislature must repeal Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban, fully restore access to IVF, and protect the right to contraception," Lands said in a statement shared by the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which supported her candidacy.

Lands had 63% of the vote to Powell's 37% with all precincts reporting.

“The voters have spoken and I’m honored to have been considered for this office," Powell said in a statement to Alabama Daily News. "I wish Mrs. Lands the absolute best as she goes on to serve the people of District 10 in the House of Representatives.”

Powell's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While campaigning, Lands focused on IVF and access to abortions, telling voters that she supports repealing the state’s near-total ban on abortions, which went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Her campaign website notes endorsements from groups such as Planned Parenthood, the Alabama AFL-CIO and the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signed a GOP-backed bill to protect IVF after widespread backlash to a ruling by the state Supreme Court in February that threatened the procedure. Tuesday's contest was seen as an early test for Democrats campaigning on IVF after the high court's ruling.

What's being missed is that, contrary to the narrative, abortion doesn't just appeal to women. Men who want the sexual freedom without the child support payments also support it.

All I can say is that if killing your own children is a winning issue, then this country deserves to fall.

In a very low turnout race, these issues can boost a candidate by a lot Also she could probably raise money nationally.

You must be proud. First state seat flip since 2002. Your giddiness is astounding. I’ve never seen someone so excited about a loss in my 20 years here.

"The Alabama 10th was redistricted after the 2022 election, so not much of an indicator without knowing the makeup of the new district."

No, the district was changed after the 2020 elections, not after 2022. Only the congressional districts in Alabama were updated more recently, not the state-level districts. This link has all of the data for the district:

Profile of State House District 10, AL

It's rated as a tossup politically. In 2022, the Republican won it by 6 1/2 points. The Republican, Dave Cole, was charged with a felony for "voter fraud" and was forced to resign. This election was mainly a referendum on him (a la the NY-3 special congressional election being a referendum on George Santos) and not some referendum on pro-abortionist crap despite the fervent wishes of the tribe of media controllers.

Cole's "felony"? Not living in the district at the time of the election because the new lines (after 2020) omitted his residence. Now think of all of the fraud-related felonies Democrats commit daily, and get away with.

Lots of people in Huntsville are not born and bred Alabamians. Might help explain the results, but Alabama has many yellow dog dems...my deceased mom was one of them...sigh

I guess the propaganda of the left for over 50 years has taken hold in society along with the mail in cheats. I will continue to vote but I believe there will be no red wave. We are now the ones that are counter culture. Rough times ahead…Revelation 17

The Republicans just need to counter the narrative.

Show all the rapes and sexual assaults caused by illegal immigrants. Shift the narrative.

“Why argue about abortion in cases of rape when rape is being imported by the Democrats?”

I believe the “vote on abortion” is cover for cheating. They need to have an excuse why they’re winning especially with high prices, wars, horrible economic conditions, etc. It’s extremely rare that an opposition party in these horrible times keeps losing.

Thanks for the clarification. And why do dems get away with their fraud? Because the GOP bends over and takes it- willingly

Do you know if a Democrat or a Republican held the seat before Cole won in the previous election.?

This district is somewhat similar to the old version of House District 10, which in 2018 (the last election here since AL elects members every 4 years rather than every 2 years) went to the GOP by about a 13-point margin.

That outcome overstated the true nature of the district in all elections, however. It was really only about an R+2 district. The current version of AL House District 10 is rated as even, which means that post-2020 redistricting moved it about 2 points to the left.

Many Republicans stayed home because it was raining, they thought the Republican could win, the Democrat was not running on issues that really affected them. Besides why vote early?

We can bitch and complain all we want but until people care enough to work and get out the vote it is difficult to win especially at the local level. Women have become two issue voters. Abortion rights must be maintained even if every other right is lost and give me free stuff and let everyone else pay for it.

Get ready for a FJB 2024 win! Our side doesn’t stand a chance! Isn’t Alabama a red state? If we can’t even win there …. Our country is cooked!

I'm just tired of people here crying "vote fraud!" every time a Democrat wins a race. It removes our accountability over running bad candidates and unpopular issues. And ultimately, it will depress turnout in November, just like it did in the '21 Georgia senate runoffs when Trump said our votes won't count.

Well, the people who didn't vote certainly didn't have their votes counted!

“We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life….We affirm our moral obligation to assist, rather than penalize, women who face an unplanned pregnancy to choose life, we support legislation that requires financial responsibility for the child be equally borne by both the mother and father upon conception until the child reaches adulthood.”

To those who claim the right to life is a ‘non-winning’ issue, why have parties at all when they both look the same? It doesn’t remove the issue, it only WEAKENS our platform (see bottom of page 13:

I looked at the voting numbers for the 21 senate runoff. More Republicans voted in that than any runoff in Ga history. In fact, more showed up than even the governor’s race a few years earlier. But as was the case with 2020, democrats manufactured more votes to overcome the difference.

A very good summary of 2020 fraud in GA can be found in this document, pages 5-11.

It is also a fact that many Dems crossed over in GA’s open primary to vote for Kemp and Raffensperger. I don’t know one Republican who voted for them in the primary, out of 100s of friends. These two are complicit in the fraud that has taken place here and I believe that in return were “selected”to their positions again (NOT elected). There is quite a bit out there about their corruption that I won’t go into here.

Anyone who thinks low voter turnout is the reason for any of this, is ignorant at best, dishonest at worst.
