Democrat wins Alabama special election in early test for IVF as a campaign issue

Democratic candidate Marilyn Lands on Tuesday won a special election for a state House seat in Alabama after she made in vitro fertilization and abortion rights central to her campaign.

Lands, a licensed professional counselor, defeated Madison City Council member Teddy Powell, a Republican who once worked as a Defense Department budget analyst. A Republican had held the Huntsville-area seat in the state's 10th District.

"Today, Alabama women and families sent a clear message that will be heard in Montgomery and across the nation. Our legislature must repeal Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban, fully restore access to IVF, and protect the right to contraception," Lands said in a statement shared by the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which supported her candidacy.

Lands had 63% of the vote to Powell's 37% with all precincts reporting.

“The voters have spoken and I’m honored to have been considered for this office," Powell said in a statement to Alabama Daily News. "I wish Mrs. Lands the absolute best as she goes on to serve the people of District 10 in the House of Representatives.”

Powell's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While campaigning, Lands focused on IVF and access to abortions, telling voters that she supports repealing the state’s near-total ban on abortions, which went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Her campaign website notes endorsements from groups such as Planned Parenthood, the Alabama AFL-CIO and the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signed a GOP-backed bill to protect IVF after widespread backlash to a ruling by the state Supreme Court in February that threatened the procedure. Tuesday's contest was seen as an early test for Democrats campaigning on IVF after the high court's ruling.

Not every election has voter fraud. If you don’t understand the backlash against the IVF Alabama SC decision, then it is just your wishful ignorance and nothing more.

Just because you have a certain belief, it doesn’t mean it is shared by others. I would have thought you would understand that by now.

It shouldn’t be possible that the Dem was able to win on the IVF issue even though the Republican governor signed legislation that protects it. My guess is that the Dem massively outspent the Republican and ran ads that gave the impression that it was being prohibited. The Republican lacked the funding to counter it. Maybe the Republican was also incompetent as so many of them are.

"Today, Alabama women and families sent a clear message that will be heard in Montgomery and across the nation. Our legislature must repeal Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban . . . "

Beside herself, those voting for her will have God to answer to. Those little creations are His!

FYI, it’s not a “belief”. But I do understand that even some of our eldest Freepers (those who aren’t DUmmy closet commies) have succumbed to the slanderous lies of the DNC propaganda mill....congrats!

Yes, EVERY ELECTION in my lifetime has had voter fraud...extensive. Watch it happen in REAL TIME every time (vote-a-matic with too many ballots making hanging chads, ballots in the trunk, “missing” 12AM ballot box in a church stairwell, smokes-for-votes, sex-for-votes, booze-for-votes, dead voters, judge orders polls to stay open, etc.) every election, even those we “win”. Next, you’ll tell me 2020 was the “free-est and most-secure election of our lifetime!”

To deny there is fraud involved in passing the baby-killer agenda is irresponsible enabling and encourages more of the same uniparty tripe to get us to surrender on one of the most important issues of our lifetime.

IF YOU WON’T STAND UP FOR THE INNOCENT, you are just the same as the baby killers...So what if you wear the elephant hat today. I don’t want to win for the sake of a win if their agenda reigns anyway (BUSH, McCAIN, ROMNEY). Either STAND UP or surrender, put on a dress, and squat with the commies.

Republicans can’t win elections where abortion is a major factor.

Seat previously held by Republican David Cole. Cole had defeated Democrat Land when he won the seat, now she came and won the seat for Dems.

Right.

The Alabama 10th was redistricted after the 2022 election, so we don’t know the makeup of the new district.

You'd have to analyze the area at the precinct level for the last several elections.

Not really worth the time, unless you're fascinated by the question.

Nope. If women want their abortions that bad, I’m not willing to turn over the country to commies trying to stop them. Let them have their abortions.

It’s a competitive seat, not a red seat. The last election before redistricting had the Republican winning 52/48. Trump only won this district by 1 point. In a special election, because they are so low turnout, all it takes to win a seat is finding one issue that motivates a small demographic & it can pull them over the finish line. In a normal election (i.e. non-special election this won’t happen. In normal elections messages have to be crafted to a muchhhh bigger electorate & random issues will get lost in amongst a hundred different issues. If it were an election where state legislativ/Governor races or city council/mayor/school board races or Congress/President races were being held, 90+% of the electorate wouldn’t be making a decision on an issue like this. So special elections can really be winnable by people or political parties in areas that would normally never elect them. That’s why most of the winners of special elections, who managed to flip a seat, end up losing in the next normal general election 😉
