People are installing bollards in their driveways to protect their cars from thieves in Toronto
National Post ^ | 03 25 2024 | Joshua Chang

With car thefts at an all-time high in Toronto, some people are resorting to installing retractable bollards in their driveways — vertical posts to physically prevent their vehicles from being stolen.

According to the Toronto Police Service’s major crimes indicators dashboard, car thefts increased by 25.4 per cent in 2022. Insp. Paul Rinkoff described it as a “dramatic surge” in the city’s auto theft crisis over the past few years, with the number of vehicles stolen this year already skyrocketing.

“When you compare 2020 to 2023, we saw an increase of 54 per cent in relation to auto theft,” he told the National Post. “That means 9,795 vehicles stolen in 2022 and 12,170 vehicles stolen in 2023. From the beginning of March, when compared to last year, we’re seeing a 114 per cent increase with 1,495 cars already stolen in 2024.”

Amid the crisis, people are looking for more ways to prevent car thefts, with bollards becoming an increasingly popular option.

My 16 Tacoma is a 6 speed manual.

That surprises some people when they see it.

"Whatever happened to the simple Kill Switch?"

A thief, not knowing there was a kill switch, could do a lot of damage. Bollards show it's not worth the effort.

Watch government officials outlaw them, claiming that those bollards would interfere with first responders...firefighters, etc., from being able to access the property in case of an emergency.

Should put them in to keep Trudeau’s government thugs out.

Last year, Ellison blamed auto manufacturers Kia and Hyundai for a spate of car thefts, going as far as to open an investigation into whether the manufacturers had omitted “industry-standard, anti-theft technology” on some of their automobiles.

Fancy bollards? Naw. Just get yourself a trunk monkey.

And if you’ve never seen a “trunk monkey” video, trust me on this. The 30 second video below is worth the click.

The criminals will show their contempt of the bollards by vandalizing the car.

I mentioned a while back here on FR that a single piston hydraulic lift in the driveway would work nicely.

Get the car 8’ off the ground and try to drive that away!

On my BMW it’s easy. Just unbolt eight fasteners, unsnap the cable tray, remove the cabin air filter assembly and the tray beneath it. Remove four fasteners and take off the engine cover. Lift the latch on each of six coils and unplug the coil wires. Easy-peasy!

Yes, I’m messing with you.

And the reason I’m remembering this process is they’re really not kidding about the 100K mile spark plugs. At 100,100 miles I got a cylinder misfire code. Had to replace coils and spark plugs last weekend. Good to go now (not for another 100K miles, this is a BMW after all).

Government and potential terrorist targets in Ottawa use them a lot.

Parliament Hill, US Embassy, DND HQ...

So they will exempt the elite.

“Certain Kias and Hyundais are wired by using a simple USB connection and there are videos showing how simple and fast it is. literally seconds and they’re gone”

The issue is that the ignition switch lock is poorly guarded from tampering and the engine does not have a key chip immobilizer. One breaks out the lock and the electrical part of the ignition switch has a rectangular hole that can be turned with a USB cable or a million other objects.
