track of the ship as it approached the bridge

There appears to be 2 course changes.

If the ship had lost power, and kept on the first course change, it likely would have missed the support.

Yes! Ybor City is where I learned all about black beans and rice. The food there was fabulous. I’m closer to Orlando now but back then Clearwater/Tampa/St.Pete were so nice.

Biden has nothing to worry about.

Mayor Pete has got this.

You know there could be a more ominous explanation. Surely to God, when the Coast Guard asked him what happened he didn’t take the fifth to protect his employer. What does the Coast Guard say his explanation was?

*not the bridge* The red oval is the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895), the FSK bridge is farther out the channel.

And if the power went down, wouldn’t that take the navigational equipment down?

I think just the spans near the channel went down.

The whole of it when down, only the land section remain.

Wow… thanks for posting. Such a beautiful bridge in the night skyline. Here in the mountains we have a lot of bridges over gorges, so no risk of someone driving into it.

Interesting enough the Captain probably was not at the helm of the ship. Ports have independent Pilots that steer ships out of Port. Reports are that were two Pilots on board. See link

That is not the Key Bridge. That’s the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. The bridge was farther out.

Repeat this is not a piece of Tupperware - its 95,000 tons - dropping the anchor at 12 knots would have ripped the chain off its mounting and severely damaged the ship ... and it still would not have stopped, but swung around pilling up on top of the bridge wreckage. You can’t even do that with Tupperware day boats.

Surface wind was probably faster than general Balitimore readings reported.

The Dali containers are probably empty, and the net of that was, the sailing ship factor was greater than expected.

The moment of realizing there is a problem to avoid, and given the known navigational behavior of the ship (rudder capability), the helm was given a command to increase speed in order to increase rudder effect - in order to improve the ship position toward the center of the channel.

That tends to “kick out” the stern . . . before the ship is able to proceed forward into alignment with the intended, hopeful direction. With a “weak” rudder, that maneuver can lead to over-compensations - a bit of stern zig-zagging - before the ship straightens out into alignment.

The ship position did not improve, so the ship tried emergency reverse - too late.

My guess.

I have been under that magnificent bridge many times. I’m in shock.

Or, they lost power (which means, they lost navigation equipment), working on getting it back. Panic ensues, got power back (or maybe generators engaged) and lost it again. Could be terrorism, could be an old ship with lots of problems.
