Been here long enough, I am one of the locals.
Beside Hawaii is run by non-Hawaiians, Japanese
and Chinese.
With a lot of Filipinos and “Porto Gee” tossed in.
There is so much intermixing, it is foolish to classify people by race here.

Lived in Kaneohe, Oahu for 3 years as a Naval Gunfire Liaison for the Marines.  Hawaii is a lovely place and it is indeed a melting pot.

Your remarks reminded me of a short story by the great Jack London who published a collection of Hawaiian stories called the House of Pride -- and found free on Gutenberg since the copyright has expired.

The story I recommend is named CHUN AH CHUN, found by scrolling 60% down the long webpage.  A quick excerpt from the opener:

...Ah Chun had his problems, and had had them all his life.  Not that he ever worried over them.  He was essentially a philosopher, and whether as coolie, or multi-millionaire and master of many men, his poise of soul was the same.  He lived always in the high equanimity of spiritual repose, undeterred by good fortune, unruffled by ill fortune.  All things went well with him, whether they were blows from the overseer in the cane field or a slump in the price of sugar when he owned those cane fields himself.

If you can spare 30 minutes of time, this short story will satisfy, I think.
