I remember when the first homosexual flag flew over our embassy at Tel Aviv.
The effect on the locals was palpable.
Here, instead of the Stars and Stripes, was a new symbol representing who we were,
what we really stood for.
In Israel that was a shock.
I think it also made all the gay Tel Aviv guys blush.
It was like finding out your best friend and most relied-upon ally ha late-stage AIDS.
