Shell To Close 1,000 Gas Stations: Here's Why, Company Says: Aims to reallocate resources towards EV charging stations.

One of the nation's major oil companies says it will close 1,000 gas stations.

Shell made the announcement in its 2024 Energy Transition Strategy report, saying the measure is “in response to customer needs” and aimed at reallocating those resources towards EV charging stations.

Shell said it will close 500 stations in 2024 and the other 500 in 2025.

“We believe growth in oil demand is set to slow in the second half of this decade and could start falling in the 2030s because of increasing vehicle efficiency and growth in electric vehicles," the company stated in the report. "Today there are around 40 million such vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs) on the roads, with up to 275 million expected by 2030. “

"The availability of charging points will be critical for the growth in electric vehicles."

There are more than 12,000 Shell gas stations across the US.

Specific stations slated for closure have not yet been announced.

For those with garages and even 100 mile per day commutes a Tesla 3 will make that trip every day using only one third of.it’s pack. Better yet if your work has a L2 charger that’s part of your benefit package. I have a 106 mile round trip commute for months at a time when I take.that contract. The parking deck has 15 L2 spots a Tesla will charge at 35 mph from a L2 that means 3 hours or less for the whole trip to and from home to work and back. With this situation I would never need to charge at home only for free at the parking garage. Drive in arrive with 70% pack left. Charge before lunch to 100% LFP packs want to be at 100% then go get lunch and take a regular spot allowing someone else can charge up after lunchtime. Drive home leaving at nearly 100% SOC it’s 53 miles home. Park over night in my garage at home warm and snug next to the other two vehicles in there. Wake up without charging off the 50 amp plug on the garage wall no need too. Drive back to the parking garage plug in at 70% SOC wash rinse repeat. This would save me $3000 on gasoline costs in a car that costs half of what I paid for the S60 Volvo that does the commuting now.

A model 3 will take 170 or 250kw supercharger rates depending on if it’s a RWD,AWD or LR model. The LFP cells are in the RWD and take 170kw V3 rates. The pack in a M3 RWD is 57.5kWh taking a pack from 10% to 80% is 40.2kWh net and 45kWh gross accounting for pack charging losses. At 170kw 45kWh is .26 of an hour or 15 min this is on par with what I have experienced renting more than two dozen Tesla of various models all of them will add 200+ miles range in 15 minutes or so. 200 miles is three hours plus of seat time no where in North or central Texas can you average more than 70mph over multiple hours with normal traffic conditions nor legally even in the 75mph rural zones the semis always get in the way doing 65 maxing out their governor speed limiters. So the reality is for every three hours in the seat it takes 15 min to put three hours more back. My bladder limits are three hours or less so a stop every 3 is not an issue. If it’s more than a 3 hour drive I’ll fly as it’s more efficient use of my time and rent a car where ever I land at usually a Tesla the driving assistance tech is the draw.

You cannot just walk up and steal a Tesla there is no keys nor can it be hot wired it takes a encrypted code sequence to unlock or have the motors move a Tesla. My lawyer found this out the hard way when he left his phone in the center console got out and walked away the car saw no one in it and locked but the app on your phone is the key to get in it and make it move. There is a back up pocket valet fob but his was at home. He being a boomer panicked and was thinking about how to break a window since there is no manual release to slim Jim a lock like an old beater car. I got a good laugh out of his panic then said hey why don’t you just login to your car via my phones Tesla app and open the doors champ. He gave me the most dumbfounded look and was like I don’t remember the password I set...omg your killing me smalls. Took a phone call to Tesla support and pop doors opened once he verified he was the real owner.

So no you can’t steal a Tesla and even if you did carjack one and get the back up fob from the owner before you left a single call or login to any Tesla app or Tesla web presence will send a OTA command to bring to a halt and then brick the Tesla and it’s GPS position to the cops. You can in certain states also send the command to lock the doors and not let them open even from the inside trapping the carjackers until the cops arrive. Tesla glass is not easy to break you cannot kick it out you would have to have a glass breaker tool or a hammer. This has been repeatedly confirmed by people being trapped in their Tesla when the doors refused to open. A CEO drowned in Austin when she backed her Tesla into a private lake and then it wouldn’t let her out. Those in the know that behind the door panel in the driver’s door kick panel side is a manual release it’s well hidden

What they are really doing is closing 1,000 stations (that would be on average 20 per state) that are in crime infested, dangerous locations.

Gas stations/convenience stores in the hood are usually cash cows. The markups on beer, cigs and junk food are pretty hefty. But, of course, if you work there, you're behind bullet-proof glass all day.

If you look at the locations of Tesla superchargers that tend to be at upper middle class destinations this is because Teslas are intended for that demographic. We have bucees mega gas stations all over Texas and they all have at least a dozen V3/4 Tesla chargers. This is squarely targeting the middle class as bucees tends to be the Wal-Mart of truck stops. The other locations you always see Tesla chargers is outlet malls and any entertainment district with night life , and restaurants. The fee to leave a Tesla in a SC spot past its full point can be $2 per min at peak times so most people move them as soon as it’s done. You can reserve a spot for the same $1_2 a min therefore keeping it open for you even if someone pulls up into it the cord won’t charge it will.show reserved no matter how many times you plug it in and out eventually they get the point and move on. These are non Tesla drivers a Tesla would show that SC as reserved on the dash pad. The screen on the charger itself shows this but you will see people still trying to get around the lock out.
