WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., who announced last month he would not run for re-election, will resign from Congress early, he confirmed in a statement Friday.
Gallagher’s departure before the end of his term in January is another blow to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Republicans, who have been struggling to govern and demonstrate stability this Congress.
Two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News of Gallagher's plan to resign early on Friday. The Wisconsin Republican then released a statement announcing that he will depart on April 19.
The speaker's office confirmed that Gallagher informed Johnson of his decision earlier this week.

“Gallagher is a traitor to his party and to the people who voted for him. What a spiteful, repulsive creature.”
Voters need to let him know.
Gallagher was the guy (or one of the guys) who killed the first Mayorkas impeachment vote. So, yeah, maybe he’s been blackmailed or paid off.
As I posted when Buck made his announcement, these guys’ constituents need to file class action suits for Breach of Contract or similar. They voted in their reps on good faith that they do their jobs for the duration of their respective terms.
“To spend more time with my family” isn’t a legitimate reason. “I (my child, or my wife) have cancer” is a reason.
That missing Ukraine money comes in handy for Dems to bribe and blackmail their way back into power.
Clearly one of the goals is to shut down the committees exposing the Biden corruption. I shudder to think what other crap they’ll be able to pull, including passing bills to rig the upcoming election.

Gallagher is in an R+15 district so he isn’t protecting his seat from a Democrat winning a special election.
He’s purposely leaving it vacant through November to sabotage the Republican majority.
Really letting you know what he actually thinks of conservatives on the way out.
“How can a new Congress address Electoral College or election issues related to themselves?”
I have no clue what you are asking, but the Constitution requires the Electoral College to meet in Janurary.
Remember Jan 6? That is what that was all about, to confirm Joe Biden as pesident by the Electoral College. The demonstration Trump was promoting was to pressure Congress to investigate, not overthrow, the election, and not rush to confirm.
I listened to Dan Bongino rant and rave as long as I could stand it and he kept saying Jefferies would be in charge of the House. He does not know that. (Jefferies is already in control of the House.)
If the Republicans gain or regain control of the House in the November election, a Republican will be own the gavel.
Still waiting for any Democrats to leave early....
Evidently somebody is offering these R’s huge jobs or other payoffs to kill the Republican majority. Who is it? What are their next gigs?
How about a massive prayer meeting to request God remove this loser from the planet Before April 1, 2024. ANy other names to be on the prayer list? Nancy Pelousi, Adam Schiff, etcx.
The Electoral votes are counted (not certified or approved) by a Special joint session of the new Congress, as the first order of business after officers are elected. The President of the Senate (Kamala Harris) presides over the session, but all rulings by the chair can be appealed to the floor, where each Senator and each Representative has one vote.
A simple majority (268) can overrule the chair. Although there are 538 Electoral votes since the States unwisely awarded 3 EV to Congress for the District of Columbia in 1960 by amending the Constitution, there are only 535 votes in the Special Joint Session since even Congress in 1960 was not corrupt enough to give itself Senators and Congressmen.
Electors meet in their respective State capitals on the second Monday in December and cast their votes, which are sent to the Secretary of State along with certificates of ascertainment from their State's Executive authority; both for transmittal to the President of the Senate for counting in public in a Special Joint Session to occur on the first business day of the new Congress in January.
There is no such thing as "Presidential certification".
You know what I meant and you saw what I responding to.
The Electors cast their votes in December. But, the votes are not counted and accepted by Congress until January, after the new Congress is sworn in.
Look at the date the new Congress is sworn in and the date the Electoral votes and opened and counted.
I remember that post.
Congress has NO ROLE in the appointment of the President, this is the SOLE PREROGATIVE of the State Legislatures (and of Congress’s 3 electors since 1960).
IF the State Legislatures fail to appoint 270 or more Electors to vote for one man, then the HOUSE (not Congress) elects the President from the top 3 electoral vote getters, and the Senate elects the Vice President from the top 2 electoral vote getters. In case the House has to elect the President, each State gets one vote (California = 1, Wyoming = 1), and in case the Senate has to elect the Vice President, each Senator gets one vote.
The whole POINT of this complicated machinery was for the States acting as sovereigns to appoint the President, with all branches of the Federal government excluded ON PURPOSE.
This is why Congress cannot “certify” the choice.
My response was to the issue of which Congressional “House” would be in place at the time of the stated action/certification (of anything). I said it is the current Congress vs the new one. New one, current one; Congress, House. Whatever. Your point wasn’t what I was referring to.
The Electoral College vote is Jan 6.
