WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Thursday announced a sweeping antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of engineering an illegal monopoly in smartphones that boxes out competitors and stifles innovation.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New Jersey, alleges that Apple has monopoly power in the smartphone market and uses its control over the iPhone to “engage in a broad, sustained, and illegal course of conduct.”
The lawsuit — which was also filed with 16 state attorneys general — is the latest example of the Justice Department’s approach to aggressive enforcement of federal antitrust law that officials say is aimed at ensuring a fair and competitive market, even as it has lost some significant anticompetition cases.
Apple called the lawsuit “wrong on the facts and the law” and said it “will vigorously defend against it.”
President Joe Biden has called for the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to vigorously enforce antitrust statutes. The increased policing of corporate mergers and business deals has been met with resistance from some business leaders who have said the Democratic administration is overreaching, but it’s been lauded by others as long overdue.

It’s interesting that Biden would go after Big Tech in an election year. Did Cook fall behind on his Dane Geld payments? Did Biden hike the 10% to 15% and Cook refused the offer?
Will other tech companies see this feral gangster government for what it really is?
“I don’t see any monopoly.”
Words and phrases like ‘monopoly, ‘woman’ and ‘shall not be infringed’ are good examples of this.
Oh and that is the US market. In China Apple ain’t so hot and it varies no doubt from country to country.
That’s what I was thinking too. Otherwise this doesn’t make any sense. The DOJ is mad that Apple products work well together and they take steps to keep malicious people from compromising their products? Shocking!
Here’s a fundamental question…
Where in the Constitution is the Executive Branch - or any Branch - explicitly empower to “bust trusts?”
Here’s a hint…it’s not.
Having lived through the “experience” of owning an Android Phone” some years ago, this is total crap.
first they came for your tic tok, then they came for your iPhone!
Ain’t Pedo Joes government grand!
So cell phone users are being strong armed into purchasing the most expensive phones in the market?
Charge Cartier selling similar items you can purchase at Tiffany’s under your antitrust laws....
The fact of the matter is, if you want to make phone calls, surf the web, use productivity tools, take picture, whatever...There are plenty of $150 phones that do all those things.
No one is making you purchase a $1000-$1500 phone....
Apple doesn’t have a monopoly on mobile phones.
~~~
Samsung has a 20%-25% share of the smart phone market, and there are other makers out there too.
My guess is that this is an act on behalf of the deep state to twist Apple’s arm into giving them more access to everyone’s personal data without warrant. Cooperation they are used to from silicon apple giants like Meta and Alphabet, as well as financial, cellular, and other corporations
Which smartphone maker based in the far east paid for this lawsuit, or did they all chip in?
Translation: “Apple refused to install backdoor software to allow the FBI and CIA to secretly spy on users.”
Apple phones only have a market share of 24%, with Samsung coming in 2nd at 16% and the rest divvied up
The real secret sauce is Apple comprised 80% of the gross profit market share.
Well there’s a whole lot of stuff going on not in the Constitution. Some monopolies have been broken up in the past. Standard Oil and ATT come to mind. Not sure what they plan to do to Apple though.
Tis just a distraction to take heat off of the Big Guy!
Will he take my bag phone?
Just curious.
Well, there it is, I guess I need an Apple phone... :(
“Government Do Something!” is how we got to this point. The USG is way too large and was never intended to have this level of control.
The real issue here is that Apple is no helping the NSA and State Department and people are mad. This is how the USG controls the population now.
Ding Ding Ding...we have a winner
Since I own and appreciate a Galaxy it is blatantly in your face obvious that this is just another govt banana republic kangaroo court 3rd world crap hole fascist lawfare day at the office.
Ah ha...the 10% check must not’ve cleared.
