Elon Musk’s Tesla has suffered another safety setback after a tenacious lithium-ion fire battery suddenly hit a Tesla EV driving on an Ohio highway which led to a three-hour closure of the northbound lanes of Route 255 in Bethalto, Illinois on Sunday. Thankfully, the driver and their passengers safely escaped the burning vehicle before it was too late.
The Alton Telegraph reports that a Tesla electric vehicle caught fire while traveling northbound on Route 255 in Bethalto, Illinois on Sunday, prompting a major response from multiple fire departments and the Madison County Hazmat Team. The incident, which began around noon, proved to be a challenging task for firefighters as the car’s lithium-ion battery had entered what is known as “thermal runaway,” a term used to describe the self-perpetuating heat generated by burning batteries. Breitbart News has reported extensively on thermal runaway, the dangerous battery fires that are firefighters biggest concern when confronted with Tesla fires.

DOES FOAM WORK AT ALL???
I would love to see Ralph Nader use his same approach in banning the sale of Ev’s as he did to kill the Corvair and Volkswagen.
I read when these batteries go on fire one of the gases they expel is hydrogen cyanide which is extremely deadly. I don’t know if that is true or not, but if it is that’s one hell of a lovely thing for the environment isn’t it.
I’m an electrician. A dead short runaway of stored energy is pretty much a “burn itself out” reaction. It can be ended in a controlled detonation, but that’s even worse for everyone.
A friend is the fire chief of a neighboring town. I asked him - how do you deal with an EV fire?
His reply: let it burn.
what if its in a garage?
His reply: try to isolate the house from the garage.
“His reply: let it burn.

His reply: try to isolate the house from the garage.”
Great, now the resident of the white hut assisted Living center is going to mandate everyone drives EV, and reduce sales of gas burners! These marxist idiots are hell bent on destroying this country...What could go wrong? :-(
An Environmental Vehicle commits suicide
It doesn’t look like Locus Nolan knows the difference between Ohio and Illinois..
Ohio? Illinois?
I don’t know of any “Ohio highway” in Illinois.
Details are always lacking.
Were the batteries being push to their limit ? Uphill ? Cold weather ?
Charging night before in sub-freezing temps ?
from 1st paragraph:
“...a Tesla EV driving on an Ohio highway which led to a three-hour closure of the northbound lanes of Route 255 in Bethalto, Illinois on Sunday.”
The writer needs a geography lesson on the impossibility of driving on an Ohio highway with the fire in Illinois. He apparently doesn’t know that the state of Indiana is between Ohio and Illinois, thus keeping the borders of those 2 states from meeting.
Hydrogen Cyanide
Hydrogen Flouride
Hydrogen Chloride
Carbon Monoxide
Sulfur Dioxide
I contend that Lithium batteries are rather safe if they are idle. No charge or discharge. And safe if no physical damage occurring.
Charging can of course leave deformed and undetected internal damages. That can at anytime afterward be a quick trigger to fire.
Sir, You forgot to select “spontaneous combustion coverage” when purchasing your auto insurance policy. This claim is denied.
So much for "stop, drop and roll".
The firefighers might have to camp out at the lot as it is quiet possible that the Muskmobile will reignite days or weeks later.
A charging station battery fire left inside the interior of the building would overwhelm the place in toxic fumes. You've gotta get it outside.
