Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has proposed a bill to reduce the 40-hour workweek to 32.
Sanders on Thursday introduced the Thirty Two Hour Workweek Act to establish a standard 32-hour workweek with no loss of pay.
He is supported in the Senate by Sen. Laphonza Butler, D-Calif., and in the House of Representatives by Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., who introduced the legislation.
Sanders, who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on Thursday led the committee in a hearing introducing the act.
"Today in America, 28.5 million Americans -- 18% of our workforce -- now work over 60 hours a week, and 40% of employees in America now work at least 50 hours a week," Sanders said in his opening remarks. "We were talking about a 40-hour workweek 80 years ago, and that is what people today, despite the explosion of technology, are working."
The act also would require overtime pay at time-and-a-half for work days longer than eight hours and overtime pay at double a worker's regular pay if they go above 12 hours.
Workers also would have their pay and benefits protected even in a reduction in the workweek, under the proposal.
Sanders has argued that the concept of moving to a 32-hour workweek is not radical, noting that the United States overwhelmingly passed legislation to establish a 30-hour maximum work week in 1933, although the measure did not make it into the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The Fair Labor Standards Act signed into law in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the 40-hour workweek standard.

Exactly.
We’ll tell teh cows we’ll only be feeding and milking them 4 days a week and try to get all our field work done in 32 hours a week instead of 80 in spring and fall crunch times.
And if we hit 32 hours we’ll just park the tractors and not finish baling hay.
It’ll be great. Just like ag production in the USSR.
This simply indicates that Bernie has never worked in a service business.
I used to run call centers that operated 24x7. We had about 500 people that worked a variety of hours.
If I had to limit them 32 hours a week instead of 40, my costs would go up through either forced overtime or increased staffing. In talking to my former peers, staffing is now a nightmare. Articulate people who can work computer systems and who can pass the credit/background checks are NOT front line call center people.
The result would be either diminished service standards or cutting hours. In any case, the cost per hour would likely increase. Significantly.
This is basic math. And Bernie has no clue. You just don’t add 20% staff in a situation like that. Customer convenience and service would be the first thing to collapse. Bernie wants Soviet style government where everyone queues up for services. That’s what would happen.
If you think waiting on the phone for a call center rep is bad today…wait until hours are cut and capacity is reduced.
He should talk about benefits to the people at the top.
Does he not own a mirror?
4.3 weeks in a month. That’s 172 hours in a normal 40 hour week.
Just pay the OT after the 172 threshold hours is met. Overwork everyone in the first couple of weeks and then hire someone else to finish out the month. Everyone gets 2 weeks quality time with the family. Too much time is wasted commuting or putting off tasks till mañana. Depends on worker safety. Spread the 172 hours over 3 weeks. Think flexibility to get things done.
Bernie’s defense for 32-hour work week: “...when Mr. Bezos pays an effective tax rate lower than the average worker, I think we have a real problem in our tax system. I think that billionaires have got to start paying their fair share of taxes.”

I don’t understand his BS logic. He’s as looney as Brandon!
Remember when everyone laughed at senator sanders 15 dollars an hour. Well it’s that and more in many states. I wouldn’t doubt this gets some traction in some states and eventually majority of states.
He was a carpenter for twenty years. Yes easy work but still….
Twenty years? I doubt it. He might have owned a hammer that long but I suspect it was rarely used.
It’s actually VERY appropriate. Bernie hasn’t worked a total of 32 hours in 50 years.
Is that what he’s claiming?
People would be forced to get 2nd jobs to make up for lost income. Employers would scream for more H1Bs and other guest workers, who wouldn't be covered by the law. More people would work for cash only, or be paid by the job.
The lazy and the shiftless have always been part of the sewage of the Democrat Party.
“The act also would require overtime pay at time-and-a-half for work days longer than eight hours and overtime pay at double a worker’s regular pay if they go above 12 hours.”
Pfffft
I already get that..... And then some.🤑
Will only end up costing jobs and burying businesses.
Which is, of course, the end game.
congress created the tax code that allows the lawyers to find and use loop holes to avoid paying the taxes and he has been creating the rules for 50 years like O’biden, so don’t tell us just fix it.
When will he just curl up & die???
He hasn’t done a single days “LABOR” in his entire miserable life.
lol. Very possible. Remember the guy is old!!!!! He didn’t get into politics until his late 40’s.
Feel the Bern
