The U.S. Embassy in Haiti is evacuating some of its personnel from the nation's capital as rampant gang violence intensifies.
"Heightened gang violence in the neighborhood near U.S. Embassy compounds and near the airport led to the State Department's decision to arrange for the departure of additional embassy personnel," the embassy, based in Port-au-Prince, said in a statement on Sunday.
The embassy remains open. The U.S. had previously warned its citizens that they should "depart Haiti as soon as possible by commercial or other privately available transportation options."
Earlier this month, armed gangs orchestrated jailbreaks from Haiti's two largest prisons and demanded the resignation of the Caribbean nation's prime minister, Ariel Henry. The Haitian leader is not currently in the country, and is petitioning the international community for a United Nations-backed security force to step in.

I am indeed.
But it won't be a replay at all. Not just there is no Daley, there also will not be any hippies.
It will be (as they say in the third world) "communal violence".
Isn’t that the 6th U.S. embassy to be abandoned in his term?
In 3 years????
It is not a true insurrection until they eat the legislators.
Lol.
The hippies weren’t all armed either.
correction: Vatican says Pope didn’t mean surrender.
“Too bad they can’t cut it free and tow it to Africa”
BTTT
Why is their Leader, Ariel Henry, NOT in the country right now? Why is abroad, asking fir a UN or American force to invade his country and restore order?
If he is so unpopular that he cannot remain in country to fix their problems, he is likely not sustainable as leader there despite how many UN or US troops occupy their soil. Am I misinterpreting something here?
The comparison with the Dominican Republic is interesting. Two countries on the same island with completely different outcomes.
Wait a second, I thought Barbecue was a criminal gangster — the worst and most powerful of the bad guys — not a reformer.
If memory serves, I think the Haitian ex slaves ruled themselves after massacring the French colonials while the Dominicans developed under Spanish rule for much longer and were better prepared to self govern. I think.
That’s right based on my memory and a quick scan of the wiki page. Some other factoids — DR has had the fastest growing economy in the western hemisphere for the last several years with annual growth of around 5%, their electrical power system is 110V/60Hz which means US electronic items can plug in and work with no modification, DR has a small community of English speakers that was founded by ex-American slaves long ago.
You gotta wonder how Barbecue got his nickname.
Lol.
Yep, picturing “long pig” on the menu at his shindigs...
The DR also produces the best MLB players in world.
Having voodoo as a nearly offical religon leads to this. Take a look at the Domenican Republic, compared to Hati.
Those gang guys are going to take it all.
Or is Biden going to send American’s to die over there, too. Or send them some weapons maybe that we all will be taxed to pay for. Or some other such useless crap.
“Wait a second, I thought Barbecue was a criminal gangster — the worst and most powerful of the bad guys — not a reformer.”
I have never been to Haiti (so all I know is what I read) but the last few days I have been following this story closely. Barbecue is indeed a criminal gangster but in recent weeks he and other gangsters have stopped fighting each other over turf and allied together to take on the government such as it is. Maybe they should now be called rebels. The gangs control most of the capitol, have shut down the main port and airport and are slowly destroying government institutions and buildings in the process of this grinding down the small (a few thousand men) underfunded police force.
The Prime Minister can’t get back in the country was supposedly in Kenya seeking help but maybe that was just an excuse to leave. His term is up as well as that of just about every other office holder even if they are still occupying their office.
Prime Minister reneged on promise of elections and pushed them out to 2025 angering many including even the gangs.
Haiti has a population of 11 million plus. Vast majority live in abject poverty. There is a small group of oligarchs (not rich by Russian standards but super rich by Haiti standards) living in somewhat secure gated communities.
You have few professional engineers, doctors etc. trying to run some infrastructure with less and less success.
Some parts of the country are more secure, Royal Caribbean is still stopping at it’s private resort on the North shore of the country.
Dominican Republic has closed it’s border with Haiti, I don’t blame them
If you decide to help in anyway that is what you have to work with.
Thanks for the details. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out. If the presumed bad guys wind up running the place better than the internationally anointed good guys, that would be quite a plot twist.
Newcomers.
