That's the question BART subway asked when BART first opened in the early 1970's in the SF/Oakland area. There were no straps to hang onto, because the politicians promised there would be seats for every rider. Nope. People were falling over unless they grabbed onto other riders. Years later, they finally placed handholds on setbacks and overhead straps to hang onto.
We stay well away from the platform edge, too many people have been shoved onto tracks.
