Mitch McConnell’s billionaire sister-in-law Angela Chao made panicked last call before dying in ‘completely submerged’ Tesla on Texas ranch: report

Angela Chao, Sen. Mitch McConnell’s billionaire sister-in-law, spent her last minutes alive frantically calling her friends for help as her Tesla slowly sank in a pond on a remote Texas ranch, according to a report.

Chao, the billionaire former CEO of dry bulk shipping giant Foremost Group, tragically died at the age of 50 on Feb. 10 after accidentally backing her car into the pond while making a three-point turn.

The driving mishap was detailed in a report by The Wall Street Journal that shed light on the chaotic rescue efforts that ultimately came up short, turning what was supposed to be a celebratory weekend with friends into a nightmare.

Chao invited several of her girlfriends from Harvard Business School to spend the weekend on a gorgeous, sprawling 900-acre private property in Texas’ Hill Country, that included horse stables, a swimming pool and a 10-bedroom guesthouse, the Journal reported.

After eating dinner together and celebrating the Chinese New Year on Friday night, Chao left the guesthouse around 11:30 p.m. to head back to the main house, where her son was sleeping. It was cold out, so she decided to take her Tesla Model X SUV for the four-minute drive rather than walk.

Trying to open a door with all windows up is near impossible I guess before the pressure equalizes.

\/

yup, cuz water is heavy.

thats why my resuscitation comment.

the window broken, the occupant most likely would drown before they could be gotten out.

either waiting for car to fully flood equalize pressure and open door and get them out

or pulled out of a broken window without opening the door after pressure equalized.

the victim most likely would panic and drown

but most can be resuscitated immediately after pulled out of the water

the whole thing stinks from a 1st responder perspective no ?

She obviously panicked (having some drink may help).
Calling 911 in this situation is the worst think to do. You will drown before anybody can get there to help you.

You must rely on yourself to extricate yourself from the car!
Four point
1> Stay calm
2. Open window
3. Unbuckle seat belt.
4. Get out of the car through the window.

If you act fast, you can do it even before the car submerges (apparently it will float at least 30 sec.) or just after that.

Breaking window is great if you have a tool.
But even the power windows will open, if you act swiftly!

If you missed this best time to act, you may actually have wait until the pressures in car and outside equalize and then open the door. But by that time you may not have enough air left.

You need to get out of the car ASAP! By yourself!
Trying to get help is the worst thing to do!
Nobody can get there in the few minutes you have before you drown.

It must be a Chinese thing.
My DW is Korean and drives quite well.
Even with my prejudices.

(Someone else driving the vehicle I’m in makes me nervous. Except in a tank, I prefer riding the Cdr’s station then. )

“Were you there when the Nork submarine washed up in Kangneung?”

I got there a few months after.

“Chao, the billionaire former CEO of dry bulk shipping giant Foremost Group, tragically died at the age of 50 on Feb. 10 after accidentally backing her car into the pond while making a three-point turn.”

Now I’m ‘really’ confused. If she was alone that night, after leaving the guesthouse where her girlfriends still were (?), having celebrated Chinese New Year...

how does anyone know that she made a “”three-point turn””. If nobody was with her or saw her, how would they know that detail? And if she was calling her girlfriends still at the guesthouse, did nobody pick up the call or come to her aid? Sorry, but.... not buying it still.

Would love to see a photo of the layout of this ranch and pond (and driveway). I’m still thinking that what they’re saying happened would probably be impossible... as an “accident”.

Yep. Taiwan was a great liberty port when I was on a Destroyer back in 69-71. Very friendly to Americans once you get away from the port area. All port areas are shyt holes.

Is anyone else bewildered by the complete lack of common sense and ability shown by the people on the "ranch"? They have a woman who is slowly drowning as they wait 24 minutes for "first responders" to arrive. Did no one have a rope? Even a rope and a horse or better, a tractor or another car might have been able to drag the car to, at least, shallow water near the edge of the stock pond.

Perhaps people were afraid of the battery exploding.

900 acre ranch with horse stables. Got to be a tractor there somewhere one or more of the people on the scene were ranch employees so some one could have made run for a tractor. I would not be surprised if there was a UTV with a winch around also.

Why did she park her car so far from the gathering place?

“Why did she park her car so far from the gathering place?”

And what kind of a “guesthouse” is a four-minute walk away? Again, I’d love to see the layout of Mitch’s property, but for ‘some’ reason, that is being kept top secret. You know if it was concerning anyone on the right of politics vs. what Mitch really is... it’d be all over the internet by now.

“Agree .. everyone should carry a glass breaker in their vehicle.”

Actually, everyone does have several glass breakers in their vehicle—they are the removable head rests on the front and back seats. The metal rods are designed as glass breakers.

I saw this on one of those videos about little known car facts.

Due to the rugged terrain, a number of responders got out of their cars and walked to the scene.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t get that statement... There are about a dozen ‘bodies of water’ on this property but it was obviously one that a) she could drive/back a car into and b) was next to the guest house which was a 4 minute walk from the main house. This assumes that it was one of the two ponds that are directly north of the main ranch house that you can see at this link.... https://www.google.ca/maps/@30.2060082,-98.3223549,419m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu
In what way is this ‘terrain that they would need to walk to?”
I believe that all Tesla controls are in a &*^%$ giant Ipad type screen. If the fordward/back controls are there also, this could be a problem. And, I hadn’t thought of it, but what happens in a *&^^%& electric car when you hit the water? Normal (and more useful) cars still have a problem with electric windows - but those would probably still work for a bit before they quit. As much as I like the potential of electrict cars, sorry, those turkeys aren’t ready for prime time. Even Teslas.
