HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana abruptly dropped his reelection bid on Friday — the second time in the past month that the hardline conservative lawmaker has entered and then quickly dropped out of a congressional race.
Rosendale cited defamatory rumors and a death threat against him that prompted the lawmaker to call law enforcement to check on his children as reasons for retiring at the end of his term in January 2025.

We have become a third world S-hole. I can’t believe how far we have fallen in my lifetime.
I don’t buy his explanation!
Must be something else.
Yahoo ‘comments’- He knocked up a 20 year-old.
That explains why Trump endorsed “the other guy” for the Senate race.
When empires fall it happens in stages, not all at once. The decline of the United States began on 11/23/63 with a coup against President Kennedy and has been slowly ongoing since. The Biden meat puppet is the last piece, unless DJT defies the odds again. Vote for him like our nation depends on it.
He’s ugly(those things count). Hard right wing. That makes it easier for the left to pin him down. All they have to add is that he’s mean.
Give the left 3 reasons and they’ll run with it. If there’s only two they’ll make up one. Pretty smart I must say.
It’s a political resume enhancement only if you’re Rat!
Not so much if you’re GOP.
If true, it shows a lack of self-control, its good he’s gone!
Wow. That could be a “Death Threat”...
Matt Gaetz was here in Montana last month doing a campaign tour with Rosendale. I’m sure the story on this surprise decision by Matt will come out soon.
The ‘other guy’ is fantastic!

As for Matt R I am very sorry to hear this as he is a great conservative.
Montana just reclaimed a 2nd rep in congress after 20 years with only 1 and Rosendale represented the Eastern district (very conservative).
The Western district, I feel, was designed to have all of the major college towns and lib areas in order to get a Dem rep...but we voted in Zinke and that’s good.
I believe that a conservative will hold the eastern district.
I’m not saying that’s true, but it would be kind of shocking.
Sheehy is running for Senate.
************
But not a single hardline liberal to be found anywhere. /sarc
We have one running here in eastern MT who is loudly pro-Trump even in his ads. Former military, border hawk, should win easily.
Yes, I understand Tim Sheehy is running for Senate, Thank you.
Who is the conservative in the Eastern district? I would like to know his name...
Thanks.
Over time we have to lighten up. I $hit you not. Could Jesse Helms win today in NC?
There’s still room for our conservatives but we have to be aware they wear out their welcome eventually. People just get tired. Think Tancredo.
We should defer the hard-right to the hotties. Think MTG and the Bobert.
“ I don’t buy his explanation!
Must be something else.”
If he was truly afraid of the death threat he would not mention that he got a death threat.
No, as a Southerner, I’d say when Lincoln compelled the Southern states to remain in a Union they no longer wanted a part in.
At the least, the Southern states that had been part of the original 13 colony USA—and signed into it—should have had standing to dissolve their ties to the union.
Then again, when Hoover tried to fix the economy with government solutions (but not enough to effect it) and then especially When Franklin Roosevelt stepped up government to replace the economy and usurp economic choice is where we went off track.
One can argue it’s been going downhill for longer than it has existed.
point taken. Thanks.
