Amid migrant crisis, Chicago food pantries experience unprecedented demand

CHICAGO – Vicenta Buitrago stood in line for three hours at the Sheridan Market food pantry on a recent afternoon. The small waiting room was packed, and guests spilled out the front door onto the sidewalk.

Despite the wait, the Colombian migrant left beaming, pushing a grocery cart piled high with an assortment of produce and other goods. A pot of red tulips from Trader Joe’s was perched above her bags.

“Mira, que bonito. Look, how beautiful,” Buitrago, 59, said. “It’s been so long since I’ve had flowers.”

For many nonprofit food distributors, hourslong lines have become the norm. Food pantries across Chicago are grappling with a wave of unprecedented demand, driven at least in part by the influx of migrants in the city, forcing some to cut back services.

Many pantries have reduced the number of allotted visits per month to stretch supply. Others are rationing food products offered to guests.

“We’re running out of food,” said Pastor Sandra Gillespie, who runs Chosen Bethel Family Ministries Food Pantry in Englewood. “If this rate of increase continues, we’re going to have to change something.”

In economics, the demand curve for “free” is infinite.

Of all the untruths they have ever told, “Free stuff” may be THE greatest falsehood democrats have ever uttered.

Free ALWAYS costs somebody......usually taxpayers.

Amid ILLEGAL ALIEN INVASION.

That is what this is. Over the past several years we have MILLIONS of new people here.

People who need apartments, schools for their kids, doctors.

WE DON'T HAVE all of a sudden a bunch more apartments, schools and doctors to absorb them. Where do you think these people are going to get apartments, schools and doctors? Thin air?

No, their presence will make housing way more expensive - hello, supply and demand ... your classrooms full of non-English speaking people who grind academic progress to a halt because they must be "accomodated" at the expense of American children ... your doctor's office unable to give you appointments because of the new influx of "newcomers" given free medical care.

Do any leftist bridges not walls idiots EVER think this stuff through?

It is good to be an illegal immigrant to America...

A better paying job than many many native-born Americans enjoy.

Somebody got shouldered back so this person could get in line.

Start sending them to the Personal Residence of Elected Officials and Officers of the Court to get free food.

Which is why it should be a Felony for ANY Public Employee or Officer of the Court to send their children to any Educational Facility other than the Public School in their district.

I'm so old I remember when even Dim Bubba Clinton said that welfare should be temporary. Of course that was when Republicans in Congress had actual backbone to stand on the budget, forcing Clinton to come to terms.

IMHO, as much attention as illegal immigration is rightly getting the attention it deserves, let's not forget to also win the argument that food pantries shouldn't be the permanent service it often turns out to be.
