As democracy remains under siege, it has been frustrating to watch how the press covers politics these days. I am reminded by lessons that came to me during the Nixon years as a CBS News correspondent, which I’ll add here:
1. Enough with Both-sides-ism
When one side lies intentionally and repeatedly, they are no longer entitled to the benefit of the doubt. They should be held to account, right away. Do not simply repeat the narratives they spew.

In 1981, Rather was promoted to news anchor for the CBS Evening News, a role he occupied for 24 years. Along with Peter Jennings at ABC News and Tom Brokaw at NBC News, he was one of the “Big Three” nightly news anchors in the U.S. from the 1980s through the early 2000s. He frequently contributed to CBS’s weekly news magazine, 60 Minutes.
Rather left the anchor desk in 2005 following the Killian documents controversy, in which he presented unauthenticated documents in a news report on President George W. Bush’s Vietnam War–era service in the National Guard.
He continued to work with CBS until 2006, when he was abruptly fired.
In September 2007, Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit against CBS and its former parent company Viacom. Rather accused the network and its ownership and management of making him a “scapegoat” in the Killian story.
An intermediate New York state appeals court dismissed the lawsuit in September 2009, and the New York Court of Appeals refused to reinstate it in January 2010.

I agree completely.
Cronkite was another liar. He presented the news about the war in Viet Nam as if he had public opinion on his side. This was false. At no time during the war did the communist- backed anti war movement have the support of the majority of America. This is one of the reasons that President Nixon won re election with a massive 49 state sweep in ‘72. It was an overwhelming and clear cut rejection of the anti war movement, yet they pretended otherwise for decades, and many still do today.
BTW, what Nixon did in Watergate was absolutely nothing compared to the ENORMOUS crimes, including treason, committed subsequently by democrat presidents like Clinton, Obama and currently Biden.
Thank God for President Trump. He finally put a stake through the heart of the talking head liars by consistently calling them Fake News. The only thing these people had was their credibility, and Trump destroyed it, with half the country at least. Now they spend their days talking to each other, wondering what happened.
