Prosecutors brought a dozen additional charges against Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), including obstruction of justice and bribery, after one of the senator’s co-defendants took a plea deal and agreed to cooperate.
Unveiled on Tuesday, the superseding indictment now charges Menendez with a total of 16 criminal counts over allegations he accepted luxurious bribes in exchange for his political influence and acted as an agent of the Egyptian government.
Menendez pleaded not guilty to the previous rounds of charges and has brushed off calls to resign from the Senate.
Many of the new counts involve alleged schemes with three New Jersey businessmen already brought to light in the senator’s previous indictments, but prosecutors now charge Menendez directly with bribery, extortion and acting as a foreign agent rather than merely bringing conspiracy charges.

Wondering the same thing, why are they going after him now? Do they have a candidate they want to replace him with, maybe someone more loyal to the revolution?

Hmm. Is acting as a foreign agent, at the same time as serving in Congress, an act of treason?
I believe Menendez is guilty as all hell but this is a vendetta against him from Barack Obama. He didn’t play ball with Barky, now he’s going to prison out of revenge.
It’s the Toricelli rule. They are just waiting until after the convention to replace him.

Sigh. Treason is specifically defined as giving aid or comfort to the enemies of the U.S. or making war against the U.S. We have not had an ‘enemy’ since WWII, the last time Congress declared war against another country.
There’s a reason the Founders were careful to so carefully define ‘treason’. In England, treason could be charged and brutally punished (as in hanging, drawing and quartering) for doing anything that upset the sovereign. Henry VIII was easily upset and the Founders wanted non of that here.

Years back it was a dispute over Iran policy that got Menendez indicted. I’m not sure what it is this time, but I am confident the indictments were approved at the highest level (Obama, not Biden).

I know Menendez was against Obsma’s Iran deal, if that matters to a vindictive former Prez.
And still he isn’t kicked out of congress.
