When it comes to mailing letters, many people do it by dropping their envelopes in the United States Postal Service's blue collection bins placed in neighborhoods across America. However, the USPS is now warning would-be mailers that those blue boxes might not be the safest option.
In a press release, the Postal Service explained that unfortunately, the collection bins have become very attractive to thieves looking to steal identities or checks, especially at specific times and on specific days. The agency stated, "The biggest variable enticing these criminals to steal are customers depositing mail into blue collection boxes after the last collection of the day or during Sundays and federal holidays."

“Sounds like the FBI needs to get of their lazy butts and set up some stings.”
When I was in college several kids stole a mailbox as a prank (most likely having mail inside). While they may have been laughing, the FBI wasn’t and neither were their parents, nor the college.
But, of course, that was in a different America.
Emboldened criminals - another Obama/Biden legacy.
Our local PO doesn't use outside boxes any more.
Decent area. County household income roughly $120k. Voted Trump twice.
We have video doorbells and cameras around our house. Nothing specific, just because these are trying times. I would have thought that USPS would have been able to figure this out without inconveniencing their customers.
Hellooo, Newman.
Inyo-Mono ~ I too remember back in the 1950s and '60s when they were green.
Me too, but on the base everything was green...
How in the hell can someone get into the box through the access door? It seems to me that they could just have a mail slot, about 10 inches by 3/4 inch. Nobody could possibly get into it. Let me design it, very simple.
Swirling deeper and deeper into the sewer, we are.
Everyone where I live gets the mail from one collection point. We all have keys to our own box, and there are large boxes for packages. The mailman puts the key for one of the large boxes in your mail.
As for mail thieves, allow citizens to defend their mailbox, packages, and their cars with lethal force. IDK bout you guys, but at my age and income level, if my car is stolen I can never get that back. My car is mine, until it dies, or I die. I can barely afford tabs, and mandatory insurance. Who will make me whole? The government is all about putting people through the system, the Judges, attorneys, and even the cops make a very good living. Yet those harmed by crime lose in EVERY SINGLE CASE.
Our local post office on Thomas Road and 40th street in Phoenix has these in the front of their parking lot. You drive on a lane to them. They have had to redesign the letter opening by eliminating the pull down now there is no pull down drawer and it’s a very thin opening for letters because someone repeatedly was putting some sticky goop on the area you put the letters in.
Criminals tie a string to something sticky, lower it into the big blue boxes, and pull out mail. They’re usually looking for checks and gift cards. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/us-postal-service-s-new-blue-boxes-designed-to-thwart-crime-not-for-ease-of-use/ar-AA1aNR8D

I don’t disagree. Sign of the times…
Same here.
This level of skullduggery doesn’t serve anyone well.
That booth would not be allowed today .
…..
Happened to me. Thief stole a credit card payment, made a business check out of the info but misspelled my name. “Washed” the payee info off the original check and tried again but by that time my bank had caught it. Haven’t used the post office since.
if you have box in the post office and a mailbox at or near your house, the p.o. Won’t deliver mail nor any packages to your house. They are lazy clogs. FedEx and ups deliver
to my door. Why don’t the p.o. Just give the business to the FedEx and ups. It’s a waste of taxpayers money. It’s govt welfare.
I’m old enough to remember when the USPS prosecuted people who stole mail.
One source of my mail uses the p.o. Box. The other the streets address required by some laws. Po throws them all in a plastic box instead of delivering to the house or into the po box. We have to drive 3 miles to get the plastic box fulla mail. They are Lazy slobs...
